Jeff was in his mid teens mentally and although he couldn't convince anyone else of that, he could use his mental faculties to help him. He worked slowly, getting a piece of paper and a pen one day, going to the computer and getting the address to Transdem labs the next, stealing the envelope and stamp the day after, and finally, writing the letter explaining what happened and asking for help.
The real challenge was to get the letter into the mailbox on a weekday without alerting his parents who would surely insist on reading their child's letter to a strange company. With more patience, his day came. His father was paying bills and his mother was cooking dinner. He impatiently hovered over his father offering to place the stamps, hold the letters and take them outside to the box. Feigning innocence, Jeff described in detail walking to the end of the driveway, looking both ways, crossing the street quickly without running, placing the envelopes in the box, putting the flag up to let the postman know there is mail to take, look both ways again, come back across the street, come in the house and let you know its finished...
Jeff put a big smile on feigning pride that he knew how the mail system worked... his dad smiled and sighed, "Sure thing Kiddo. Ill be watching from the window."
Jeff jumped up and down with real excitement, grabbed the envelopes, his coat and shoes. It wasn't cold but he had been hiding his letter in his coat pocket, waiting for his opportunity. Jeff was actually skipping with excitement down the driveway thinking of being independent again... Maybe when all this is over he will set himself up with a job, an apartment, and be 20 instead of 16. The idea had appeal, Jeff has had enough mothering over the last few weeks to last a lifetime... Jeff executed the plan as he had stated it to his father. The only vehicle on the quiet road was the mailman coming down the street. Jeff knew that in only a few days time he would be 16 again, maybe more.
