“Two more,” she thought as she walked back towards her house.
As she moved up the stairs she saw lights flash through the windows.
Her mom's car just pulled in.
“Crap,” she thought, remembering how sick she was supposed to be.
Once in her room she changed into her night gown and hopped into bed. It wasn't long before her mom paid her a visit.
“Honey, how are you feeling?” Her mom asked, cracking the door open, “May I come in?”
Jen, careful to sound gruff, replied, “My head is a bit sore...And my stomach still hurts,” then added a fake cough.
Her mom replied, “I’m sorry to hear it. Lets take your temperature.”
Jen panicked after hearing that last line. Her mom left to get the thermometer and she planned out a few ways to fake a temperature.
Once back, her mom asked her to open her mouth, then inserted the glass thermometer. As soon as it was under her tongue her mom said “Hold that there, I’m going to go get you a glass of orange juice.”
After Mom had left, Jen quietly moved to the bathroom, nearly tripping as her legs twisted around her bulging crotch. She didn't have much time. She turned on the hot tap and waited a few seconds before placing the thermometer in the hot water. She watched carefully as the temperature rose up. 78°... 84° ... 96° ... 102°. She knew her mom would be back any minute and pulled it out at around 112°. If she had really been sick, that would have been pretty serious, but she hoped that it would cool in her mouth. She stuck the warm thermometer back below her tongue and quietly jumped back into bed.
Moments later, her mom came back in, holding a glass of OJ. Jen, faking a grumble rolled to face her and mumbled, “Welcome back...”
“Hello to you to,” her mom replied, pulling the thermometer out of her mouth.
“Oh my, 104°, You’d best stay in bed this evening.” She walked over to a small trash can sitting by Jen’s dresser and moved it to the side of her bed.
“If you need anything, just call for me or your father.”
“Alright, Thanks...,” Jen mumbled, relieved that the thermometer trick worked so well...
With that, her mom left, closing the door on her way out....
