Night Flight

added by A 8 years ago BM O

You are not sure how to work the new muscles extending from your back, but concentrating hard, you manage to make one wing twitch, then slowly extend. Processing the new sensation, you manage to accomplish the same with your other large wing. You finally get to the point where you feel comfortable enough to give your wings a flap. However, with the rush of air and the sudden momentum, you realize that your body posture is off. Losing balance, you take a few unsteady steps backwards on your hooves, then yelp at a sudden burning feeling in your left wing. Quickly wrapping the wing around you, you fail to spot any damage; however, you are certain the pain was real. You look around for the source, but the only difference in the area where you are now standing is a small patch of sunlight, which has managed to break through the thick tree growth. Your suspicions aroused, you gingerly reach into the sunlight with your hand, and are immediately greeted with a feeling akin to being scalded with boiling water. You jerk your hand back, and while there is no wound, you are still certain that it is an experiment you do not want to repeat.

You come to the realization that you may never be able to walk in direct sunlight in this world again, and it takes a few minutes to register the implications. Nevertheless, you seem to be fine in the shade, and you still want to explore this world a bit more, even if it is in an utterly alien form. As you wait for night to fall, you find a particularly shaded clearing in the forest and practice moving your wings, gradually tweaking the motion and your posture until you are rewarded with the ability to rise straight up off the ground with a few flaps. By the time the sun sets, you are assured enough in your wings' ability to find an open space in the trees, gather yourself, crouch down, and with a massive leap upward begin flapping your wings rapidly. You quickly find yourself rising above the treetops, and for the first time, get a good look at the world around you from an aerial perspective.

Amazingly, despite the dim moonlight you can see the entire lay of the land as well as you could in the daytime. It appears your new eyes have some advantages, despite being sensitive to sunlight. You survey the forest below you, and see the glow of the army campfires in the distance. There are ruins scattered across the landscape, and mountains in the distance. While you are considering where to go, the loud rumble of your stomach reaches your ears. You realize you have not eaten any food since leaving the army camp this morning, and you wonder what kind of food it takes to satisfy this form. Faced with immediate needs, you decide to...
