My ears perk as I hear a familiar voice in the darkness. I try to listen to the voice, but I can’t seem to place it where I have heard it before… “Jude… is that you? Oh my god! You look so… different. What have they done with you?... Jude do you hear me?” I feel two hands gently lifting my head. I sniff the air and the smell is oddly familiar. I open my eyes and looks up and see a woman. “Beth? Is that you?” I ask as I recognise my girlfriend’s features. A tear runs down her cheek and she nods. My tongue slips out of my mouth and greet her by licking her hand. “Why are you here?” She lets go of my head and sits down in front of me. “Well to meet you of course silly… I was worried of you since you’ve been gone for over a week without even saying a word. Then this company called me and told me that you’ve volunteered for their research program and…” She stops and stares at something on my body I look down at my body to see what she is staring at. Rough grey fur covers my whole body but I don’t take much notice of it. Beth seems to be watching my wagging tail… but I really can’t see why… “I still can’t believe it… you’re going to become a dog…”
I cock my head in confusion “Yes?” and wait as if she would soon come to the point. “But why did you visit me then?... Since you’re allergic to dogs… you’re going to feel terrible” She seems hurt when I say this. “You don’t want me to come and visit you?” She whimpers and wipes her tears with her sleeve. “Besides… the staff here were so friendly… they gave me a couple special anti-allergy shot, so I won’t feel anything of my allergy even if I would hug and kiss your furry head”
It takes a moment before I understand what she just said. “Well since you’re not allergic to me anymore, could you do me a favour?” Beth nods.
“Please scratch me behind my ear”
