The Magic Shop

You look for Brooke upstairs.

added 9 years ago O

"Brooke?" you ask unsurely, scanning the store for her. You don't see her anywhere, but your eye is caught once more by the stairway leading up to the second floor of the store. Could she have gone upstairs while you were distracted? You decide to look for yourself, and you ascend the stairs.

The second floor of the store is much like the ground floor, with rows of shelves-- in this case, containing mostly books and bottles. Toward one corner of the room, however, you see Brooke standing beside a glass case. Her attention seems to be focused on something. "Oh, there you are," you say aloud, walking over to join her. As you get closer, you can see more clearly that the item that has captured her fascination is a small wooden jewelry box containing a wristwatch and two rings.

"Aren't they beautiful, honey?" Brooke asks you.

It's true, the items inside the box are rather nice. The two each rings appear to be made of gold and set with a shimmering blue opal. The body of the watch is also golden, with a small opal and brown leather straps. Interestingly, the watch's display is digital rather than the traditional clock face you expected to see, but for some reason, the time, day, month and year are shown on the display twice. The redundancy strikes you as rather odd-- you've never seen a watch like this.

You look at Brooke. The look on her face-- you've seen that expression before. She wants these.

"Yeah, they are," you admit, "but I'm sure they're also extremely expensive. I don't really have that kind of money to spend on something like this."

"Oh, but I'm sure we can reach some sort of arrangement," you hear a voice say from behind you in a soft Scottish accent. You turn to find a diminutive, frail-looking old woman with grey hair standing there, grinning pleasantly. "Your girlfriend there seems very taken by that item. Perhaps we could negotiate a fair price."

You laugh uneasily. "Well, I sort of doubt that. I've only got twenty bucks on me..."

"Ah, but you mustn't worry about that," answers the woman, still smiling. "I don't take cash, you see. It gets to be a terrible chore, counting it, holding it here securely, taking it to the bank. My store runs entirely on its own credit system. Each person who enters my store enters with 1000 points of credit on their first time, and 100 more for each subsequent time. For that watch and ring set... I would take 1500 points."

"Wait, what?" you ask, not quite believing your ears. "Are you saying we could just take the whole set?"

"If you'd like," replies the woman, nodding. "You do have enough credits, between the two of you. Or you could look for something else."

Brooke grins excitedly. "Ooh, can we get these, honey? Please?"
