"Well, alright," you say, finally giving in. "I guess if we don't actually have to pay money for them." You turn the the elderly shopkeeper. "Though I don't quite understand how you make any profit, honestly, or how you stay in business, if you just give people points of credit for free."
"I've been in business here for over 40 years," says the old woman, smiling. "I have simply never needed to charge customers money, because the merchandise in my store is so unique." You aren't sure her answer really satisfies your question, but before you can ask her to clarify, she changes the topic back to your purchase. "Your girlfriend has very good taste as well. This set is very special. You see, the watch allows anyone who wears it, along with anyone wearing one of these two rings, to travel to another point in time."
"Really?" you ask, a bit skeptical.
"Oh, yes," nods the woman. "You see the double display on this watch? Along the bottom here, this is the current date and time. On the top is the time and date where you actually are. To move through time, first you push the button on top to stop time around you, then you use the side buttons to change the time in the top display. Once you set your destination, you simply push the button on top to restart the time flow once more."
You look at the watch. "That simple, huh?"
"Ah, but there are two basic rules you should follow when you use the watch, too. First, the watch moves you through time, but NOT space, so you should take care to make sure that you are in a place where you can avoid obstacles and cannot be seen by others before you start or stop time-- otherwise it will appear to them as if you have suddenly just appeared or disappeared. Second-- and this is VERY important-- when you are at any other point in time aside from the present, NEVER EVER remove your watch or ring until you are BACK in the present."
"Why not?" asks Brooke.
"Best not to ask, dear," says the old woman. "Just know that, so long as you follow those two rules, you should be just fine."
The shopkeeper places the wooden box with the watch and rings into a small paper bag and gives it to you, telling you and Brooke to "come back again soon".
As you step outside the shop with your purchase, you turn to Brooke and ask, "Okay... so now what do you want to do to test these out?"
