Joanie sat down at the computer, blocking the screen from Richie. "Do you mind if I write an email really fast?" she asked, "I need to let my cousin know about Mitzi. She was her favorite."
Richie shook his head, a concerned look on his face. "Of course not," he said as he rubbed his hand though his dogs fur.
Joanie turned back to the computer and looked at it. She'd set it already to create a new Mitzi, she'd thought to use one of her other animals and change them, but Richie seemed like a better choice. She'd gotten tired of him hanging around the kennel, and since he'd gotten Max she'd seen him all the time.
Richie, of course, knew none of this changed history. The Chronovac didn't change his memories to know that Joanie barely tolerated him, that he'd made passes at her over the last couple years even though they were a few years apart in age.
Joanie looked over the settings to duplicate her beloved Mitzi, her personality and appearence. She adjusted her age down to 18 months so she'd be around a long time. With a slight pause, she set the machine to alter reality, subtly moved the emitter to point at Richie, and hit the start key. The computer whirred for a moment, then popped up on screen with "Change will complete in 2 minutes".
She turned back to Richie, who was still playing with Max. "So, how is Max doing?"
Richie looked up, fur already starting to grow over his face. "Oh, he's been good. I'm sure he's going to miss Mitzi, though. They were good freinds." He shifted a bit in his chair uncomfortably.
Joanie smiled as she watched Richies ears change, slowly altering to look like her beloved Germand Shepard. "Do you want something to eat?" she asked, keeping up the converstation. She wasn't sure what might happen if he realized what was going on, or even if he could realize it.
He scratched his chin even as he fingers began to shorten and his muzzle lengthen. "I gWusss..." he mumbled, his voice going strange. He shook his head as his muzzle began to take form and for the first time looked at his hand.
Joanie looked on, getting worried. The transformation was still almost a minute from finishing. Richie kept watching his paw, feeling in his mind that something was very wrong, but at the same time it was normal. of course he had fur and a paw. But there was something familiar about the way that it looked. It was just like when he'd turned Jeff into Max....
With a start, Richie realized what was happening. He was turning into a dog! He tried to stand, but lost his balance and fell to his forepaws. By the time he hit the floor, he couldn't remember what had startled him. Something about his dog...
His memories shifted as the Chronovac ticked down. In the last few seconds, he had moments of recollection. In the last two or three, he had a clear moment of realization as the final memories of his new reality clicked in. He was no longer Richie, a teenaged human male, but now Mitzi, a Germand Shepard bitch....
And as quickly as it came, the memory faded out, and all that was left was the happy memories of Mitzi.
Joanie stood off to the side for a moment while the two dogs sniffed at each other, tails wagging wildly. When she decided that Mitzi wasn't going to be a problem, she approched and started pulling Richies clothes off of her. It took just a moment to see her young, healthy dog in all her glory.
It took only a moment longer for Max to find her. Joanie shooed the two dogs out into the fenced yard and let them explore each other while she got rid of the clothes. Joanie did wonder why the machine hadn't erased them during the transformation. Even Richies wallet was intact, with money and a school ID. She did a quick computer search, though, only to find that he didn't exist anymore.
With a smile, she looked out the window at the pair as Max mounted his new mate.
