There was once a man, a handsome, strapping bloke, who thought himself above those around him. He would spend his days looking down on those he deemed to be beneath him, showing off his fine features and desirable qualities, as well as having his way with the town's women. He was both loathed and admired by the other men in town. If only they could be as fine of men as he. But they could never hope to compare, and so were ridiculed by the strapping man.
Among the townspeople was a fair maiden. She did not like the way the man treated his peers, so she sought to set a curse upon him, for she was secretly a witch. She ordered the creation of a medallion, crafted form the finest metals. She then placed her curse upon the trinket and invited the strapping bloke over, under the pretense she would reward him for his outstanding qualities. Of course, he came seeking his rewards from the maiden. She gave him the medallion, and as he slipped it around his neck, he was instantly cursed by the witch. His body dissolved away, leaving only the golden medallion, lying in a pile of his own clothing. The man, however, was not gone. His mind still lived on in the amulet.
As he lay there, the fair witch knelt down by the former man and spoke to him. "For your reprehensible ego and distasteful treatment of your fellow man, you are cursed to take the form of this amulet from time to time. When you are this amulet, those who come across you will be compelled to pick you up and wear you. And, in that form you shall serve them as their trinket until they remove you from their body. Once removed, you will turn back into yourself, except you will have gained qualities from your wearer you will have deemed inadequate. This will happen over and over, and you will become less of who you are now, and more like the people whom you thought lesser than yourself. This curse may only be lifted when you come to accept your fellow man as your equals."
The man attempted to beg and plead with the witch to not leave him with such a fate, but he had no mouth, and could not speak. In time, he was found by a man he had thought lesser than himself. And, just as the witch had said, he was worn for a time, removed, and returned to his previous self. That is, except he had gained some of the lesser qualities of the man who had worn him. The man tried to escape his curse, but, at indeterminate times, he would transform again and again into the amulet. Sometimes he was lucky, and would go unnoticed before returning into his own form. Most times, though, he would be found and worn. Every time he was removed, he was less a handsome, strapping bloke, and more like the people he thought below him.
In time, the man saw his previous actions and distasteful and repugnant. He swore off the man he once was, and learned to accept his new self and his fellow man as equals. The curse was lifted and the amulet he would once turn into separated from his being and vanished. He would never recover his original form, nor did he want to. He lived out the rest of his days happier, if less handsome.
Legends say the amulet still exists to this day, taking on different forms throughout the ages, seeking out those with great egos and little love for their fellow man. Some say the amulet has been in the form of hats, crowns, rings, shoes, and even undergarments. Though its form may change, however, it still functions the same. Whomever the garment curses will be forcibly transformed into that garment from time to time. Whoever finds the cursed individual in the form of that garment will be compelled to take them and put them on. When the cursed individual is eventually removed, they will return to their original form, and they will have gained the undesirable attributes form their previous wearer. The curse can only be broken when the cursed one learns to accept their fellow man as equals.
It is time, once again, for the amulet, in whatever form it may be in, to find another victim...
