Nate sat down at the empty lunch table in back. He scanned the lunch room, looking for his younger brother and when he didn't see him, he pulled a book out of his backpack and started reading it as he ate his lunch. He was interrupted a few moments later when two students approached the table, one male and one female.
"Excuse me, do you mind if we sit here?" the boys who was roughly the same age as Nate, with messy brown hair and an impressive physique showing through his tight t-shirt, which Nate was quick to notice.
"Not at all, please," replied Nate. The two students sat down and began digging into their lunch. Nate looked from one to the other wondering which one would speak first. A second later, he got his answer.
"I'm Ben, by the way. This here is Bobbi," said the boy with the messy brown hair. He gestured to the girl seated next to them.
"How's it going?" Nate set his book aside.
"Good," replied Bobbi, brushing back her long, red orange hair. "You're new here, aren't you?"
"Yeah, I am actually. How did you..." asked Nate.
"Small town," interrupted Ben.
Nate nodded and took another bite of his sandwich. That was something he'd have to get used to, living in a small town where everyone knows everybody.
"Where did you move from?" asked Bobbi.
"Eden Falls. It's a suburb of Minneapolis," replied Nate. "I'm from Minnesota."
Both of them nodded.
"Lovely place. How are you liking Moon Lake?" asked Ben.
"It's nice. It's a lot quieter than where I'm from. More intimate, I suppose. Not that it's a bad thing," replied Nate.
"So, has the town chancellor come to talk to your family yet?" asked Ben.
"The town chancellor?" asked Nate
"I guess that's a no. Her name is Samantha Twist. She comes around to every family and lets them know about the town and our residents. She's a welcoming committee of sorts," replied Ben.
"Oh, okay. Yeah, no. Not yet." Nate took another bite of his sandwich. "What would there be to tell though?"
"I really can't say any more until your family speaks to Samantha."
"Ok, weird," replied Nate, wondering what Ben meant by all that.
The three of them continued to talk and get to know each other. Nate started to think he may have just made his first two friends. Maybe things were starting to look up with this move.
"What book were you reading?" asked Ben.
"Oh some silly werewolf book. I have a thing for monsters," replied Nate. "Especially werewolves."
Ben couldn't help but grin. "Oh really? Well, in that case I think you're going to like Moon Lake."
"What makes you say that? Does this town have some wild life? I think heard some of it howling outside my window last night." Nate returned Ben's grin with a smirk of his own.
"You could say that," replied Ben.
