Mary Lou and Evelyn were lost. As Mary Lou tried to tell her, the flashlights were not really needed thanks to their enhanced vision. But they found their way into the sewer easily without detection, so Mary Lou didn't give her a hard time about it. Besides, the delay allowed her to find her secret weapon. What did bother Mary Lou was that once they were in the sewer, Mary Lou was utterly useless. And now lost.
"It's not like I go down here regularly, " pleaded Evelyn. "And I couldn't find a map before we left!"
"But this was your plan, " said Mary Lou angrily. "If you didn't know how to get around down here, we should have tried something else."
The sewers were large tunnels, over 20 feet in height, with a central causeway filled with fetid water. Getting into the sewer was easy - there was a large entrance leading down into the sewer at the rear of the zoo. Evelyn thought it was maybe built when the zoo was first built to help dispose of animal waste, but she wasn't sure. In truth, she didn't care. It was an easy access to a safe escape. But once inside the sewer, she realized the escape wasn't as easy as she had hoped. The tunnels were more than large enough to accommodate their large height, but it branched in seemingly endless pathways. Along the pathways they found multiple manholes, but they were much too large to fit through these small holes. They searched, but could not find another exit as large as the entrance in the zoo.
Evelyn sat down in defeat, resting her feet in the cool water. Although the water was murky, it felt good flowing past her feet, and the smell was not that bad.
"What are you doing?" said Mary Lou.
"Just let me rest a little bit and think things over. " said Evelyn.
"We don't have the time for this. It's almost daylight. If they haven't noticed yet, they will see that I am gone soon and come after me - after US! We need to move now, " said Mary Lou nervously.
Evelyn just sat and continued to let the water flow over her feet. After a while, Evelyn quietly said, "Maybe we should go back."
Mary Lou grimaced, feeling the vials in her satchel. "What?"
"I said maybe we should go back. My boyfriend is there. Adam loves me, and I know he will help me regardless of what I look like. And maybe the answer is back at the zoo. We didn't even try to find a cure, we just ran away." said Evelyn. She seemed to get more excited by the idea as she talked about it out loud.
"And what about me, sister?" said Mary Lou with disdain. "Back to the cage for me? Even if they reverse this, they won't let me go."
"I could help you escape later.....after I am human again. I promise," said Evelyn with excitement.
Mary Lou chuckled. "Thank you, but I think I'll take my chances in the sewer."
Evelyn began to stand, and almost slipped on the wet moss lining the canal. Mary Lou grabbed her hand, and steadied her.
"Thanks, sister," said Evelyn, with a blush. "I'm going back. I wish you luck."
"And to you, sister, " said Mary Lou with a smile.
Suddenly, they both heard voices coming down the tunnel. It sounded like Adam, but the echoes in the tunnel made it difficult to tell for sure.
"See, I told you he would come, " said Evelyn with excitement, as she turned away from Mary Lou, and looked down the tunnel. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her upper thigh. She looked down to see three large empty syringes sticking through her thick hide. Evelyn looked at Mary Lou with hurt and confusion.
"Sorry, sister, but I can't go back. And I know that they will never stop looking until they find me, " said Mary Lou, then she shoved Evelyn with all her might into the canal.
