Mary Lou and Evelyn turned around and saw that Adam was gone. The door to the employee building was wide open.
"You fool!" yelled Mary Lou. "How could you let him escape?"
"ME! " yelled Evelyn in return. "You were the one holding him, and guarding the door!"
"But he's YOUR mate and YOUR responsibility!" yelled Mary Lou. "Bah! What does it matter? Let's just get out of here. If he wants run away and try to survive on his own, let him. He might be just the distraction we need to escape!"
"NO! "screamed Evelyn. "We can't leave him behind. We have to find him. He's probably just scared and confused by what is happening to him."
"We've wasted enough time already playing with your stupid 'shampoo'. I'm leaving. If you want to spend precious time looking for him, you are on your own, " said Mary Lou, as she started to walk out the door.
"And where will you go? To a lake, maybe a swamp. We're in the middle of the city, places like that are miles away from here. You've never even been outside this zoo, and you have no idea what it's like out there. Or how to blend in with humans. Face it, if you want to survive, you need us, " said Evelyn.
Mary Lou's shoulders slumped. She knew that Evelyn was right. It was why she had insisted on getting her help in the first place. She had hoped Evelyn would just follow her when she threatened to leave, but instead she had called her bluff.
"Okay, okay, I'll help you look. But let's split up and look for him. It'll save time. If you find him, just yell, otherwise we'll meet back here outside the building when the sun first shows itself."
Evelyn nodded. "I'll search the area to the left of this building, and you can search the right. Thanks, and good luck!" she said as she headed off into the dark.
