Kyle made his way to the auditorium, and waited outside with other students while the proctors prepared the room for the test. He was surprised to see Jennifer in the crowd. She was just a freshman; he thought she was too young to take the test. He tried to hide in the crowd of students, avoiding Jennifer, but she quickly spotted him and walked up to him.
"Hello, Beryl, " said Jennifer with a Cheshire grin. She put a strange emphasis on Beryl's name. "How are you feeling today?"
"I'm fine, " said Kyle, trying to ease his way away from her. Jennifer followed him, until she had him backed into a corner, away from the eyes of the other students.
"Are you sure? " she said, mockingly. "You don't seem like yourself today?"
She can't know, he thought.
"I know, " she said, with a smile. "It's your hair. It's a mess. Here, take my hair band, and it should make you look perfect. " Kyle knocked the hair band from her hand, as she tried to place it on his head. He couldn't afford to change now, or he wouldn't be able to take the test for Beryl.
Jennifer pretended to look hurt. "Oh, you don't like my hair band? I know, maybe you need some of my lipstick. That should fix you right up, " said Jennifer, as she leaned in close, in an apparent attempt to kiss him.
Kyle turned his head, and Jennifer whispered into his ear. "I know it's you, Kyle. You can't hide from me. The curse won't let you."
Of course, the curse, Kyle thought. One of the provisions was that he and Jennifer alone would be aware of any changes that occurred. Kyle knew he had to act quickly. He saw the doors open, and the other students began to file into the auditorium.
Suddenly, he shoved Jennifer to the ground with all his strength. "Ugh, get away from me, you lesbo! I don't want to kiss you. I don't swing that way. Just leave me alone!"
Kyle regretted the choice of his words, but it had the desired effect. Everyone stopped and stared at them. He could hear the students whispering all around them. Jennifer turned beet red. "This isn't over, " she sneered, then jumped up and ran away down the hallway.
Intelligence has its perks, thought Kyle smugly, and he followed the other students into the auditorium , and prepared himself mentally for the test.
