230 years had passed since the World changed beyond recognition and for the past two hundred or so a new order was very much in effect. The immediate aftermath had seen billions perish through: A lack of understanding of the situation they found themselves in; The loss of technology that many depended on for their survival; The loss of the food supplies along with the transportation of said food that everyone had been used to and taken for granted; Disease from lack of medicine; Being knocked down to the Feudal/Middle Ages; Wars for territory and food and; difficulty with adapting to the new climate with the drop in CO2, other greenhouse gasses, and particle pollutants that was quick to rewrite the planet’s weather.
Time passed before a new power structure came into being, the more aggressive Predator Species overpowering the Prey Species despite their lesser numbers, asserting their dominance over them. Perhaps this was a result of a number of the Prey Species having been domesticated and kept tame and docile to be easier to control, with others being naturally smaller and weaker while Predator Species tended to keep their instincts very much on top. With what had become of the world, that was precisely what they needed to assert their authority.
Requiring them as a food source - their digestive systems intolerant of plant matter - in turn demanded that the Prey Species in turn have good food to build them up. As a result even as large swathes of land were being reclaimed by nature, forests and grasslands growing from the decaying concrete towns and cities, stone and wooden structures were built around and atop them to lodge the inhabitants. New and old farmlands to grow the feed for the Prey.
Maintaining their hold on their lands and stock was not always the simplest task, as many of the Predators sought to increase their holdings, and were quite willing to fight for it. This would see periods where they would go to war with one another, oft-divided by lines of Species, fought chiefly by the Predators who would use this as just one reason to keep their Prey in line.
The need to send messages between the various places held by one tribe, and between differing tribes provided a means of living for Scavenger/Carrion Species who would act as the messengers in exchange for food and lodgings.
One other notable feature regarded clothing. Before, it was a very widespread thing, a requirement in many places. The loss of the industry - along with close to all others - had made it something of a luxury item. In fact, it could be used to symbolise the power and wealth a tribe held, as well as serve as a visual indicator of where one stood within a tribe’s hierarchy. A Snake dressed head to toes in fine robes and footwear for example, would illustrate that he held the top standing in his tribe, one who wore little more than decoration making him/her a low-level in it. While a Crocodilian with weapons and armour meant that he was a soldier/guard within his/her tribe. And naturally, the Prey Species had to make do without.
Today, what the world used to be is little more than myth and legend save for a very few who have either passed down the knowledge, or have discovered it for themselves by whatever means they did.
