Sammy steamed off and marched from the bustling crowd of dancers and towards the waiting tables. Ridiculous, she thought. She'd been invited to the prom by some friend of Tom's, her brother, only to be tossed aside for some cheerleader with much less of a personality and more of a dress code.
"Jerks. All of them," she said.
Really, she did get what she wanted. A trip to the prom, a dress that could turn anyone into a friend, and the makeup that all the girls in her sophomore class would be jealous of. The limo ride had been nice as well, but really, all of it had been for her stupid date, some jock dressed as a bear in lumberjack clothes.
And her? A fairy. Simple, fun, yet far beautiful by any means of the word.
A hand touched the young girl's shoulder, shaking her from her thoughts.
"Hey, are you okay?" Dana asked.
"No, I'm not. Now please, leave me alone."
The red headed dancer shook her head, pulling a chair over and sitting into it. Her massive dragon outfit bounced on top of her. "Easy, there. I'm not here to make fun of you. Alex leave you?"
"Leave me? He basically threw me aside. All I wanted was to dance with him, and I feel like some clown being left in the corner."
"You're not a clown," Dana said. "You look to be dressed as a fairy."
Sammy smiled and wiped some tears from her eyes. Same old Dana. "What are you supposed to be? I thought Godzilla lived in Tokyo."
"I take over the west for him once in a while. You know, so he doesn't have to travel."
The two girls laughed and started to talk, now that the thought of Alex leaving had been pressed under the table. The dancing had slowed, and people were now moving towards the tables to set down their stuff, get some food, and grab a drink or two from the large dish of punch.
For a night filled with failure and let-down promises, Sammy couldn't help but smile while Dana told her about her evening. Apparently, she and her date had had to ride to the dance with his parents, who spent most of the drive talking on how dancing is full of sin and that God would only forgive them if they promised abstinence from such acts. Seeing her friend dressed as a dragon as well, something practically made of sin, only made Sammy laugh more.
"Hey, I'm getting thirsty." Sammy placed a hand on her friend's shoulder. "Want some punch? I'll go grab it."
Dana agreed, and Sammy got up, making her wings and antennae bounce with a playful hop.
By now, most of the dance seemed to have everything they needed, several having punch themselves. Sammy slipped through the crowd, wishing that like her costume, she could zip and fly over everyone in a playful glow, not needing to worry about the crowd beneath and between her.
Taking the serving spoon, Sammy poured some punch into a cup and took it from the table. She knew it'd be hers, so she took a thick swallow of the tart drink before pouring a cup for a friend.
Ready, the young woman turned to make her way through the crowd again. She saw Dana waiting, phone resting in her rubbery claws.
Something felt off, however.
