".... the plants are beautiful, but very demanding. They are constantly hungry, and always want more food, " says the fairy.
"Food? I didn't know plants needed food. I thought they just got what they needed from the sun. You know, photosynthesis, " you say.
The small fairy giggles. "Yes, that is true. That is their primary source of energy. But they still need nutrients, just like you and me. They just get it in a different way. Through the soil, through fertilizer."
The fairy sighs. "Unfortunately, our supply is running very low. And the cries of hunger from the plants are becoming a deafening roar. I was getting worried. But now that you are here, it looks like everything will be okay."
You chuckle a little. "Me? I didn't bring any fertilizer. Surely you don't expect me to take a dump for you or something?"
The fairy wrinkles her nose. "Gross! Oh course not! There are far too few nutrients in your stool to satisfy the plants. Now, your body, on the other hand ......"
You don't like where this is going, and begin backing towards the door you entered. "You can't be serious? You aren't going to kill me and use me as fertilizer, are you? This has to be some kind of joke."
The fairy slowly begins to fly towards you. "Well, it's not like I am happy about it either. You seem like a nice person, but the plants will just not shut up. Their pleas of hunger are maddening, " says the fairy. She flies up to your hand, and tries to pull you back towards the garden soil.
You shake the fairy off of your hand, sending her into a spin. "You're crazy! Get away from me!"
The fairy quickly recovers. "C'mon, don't be that way. It's the circle of life, and all that. Your corpse will feed the plants, and then the plants will feed others of your kind. I promise that I will do my best to make it quick, if you would kindly step back into the soil. I am afraid it can be rather messy, especially if I have to cut you up into small pieces so I can carry you."
Through the window you see a Zoo employee decked out in a khaki body suit that resembles a beekeeper's outfit. The employee begins pointing at you, waving their hands erratically. They disappear from view, only to return with another Zoo employee. The new arrival is a young girl in khaki shorts and a khaki shirt. The person in the body suit points to you, and as the young girl sees you she turns pale white. She looks at you sadly, then shakes her head and looks at the ground, avoiding your gaze.
You are beginning to think it was a bad idea to ignore the "Employee Only" sign. You decide it is probably time to get out of here. After all, the fairy is only six inches tall, and looks as delicate as a butterfly. What harm could she do to you?
You turn to run and find several more fairies blocking your path to the exit. Dozens, no hundreds, a veritable swarm of fairies. You look back at your fairy, and she smiles, revealing small but long and very sharp teeth.
Yes, you decide, this was a very, very bad idea.
