Mary was sleeping quietly in her cave. She had decided to wait for Amy to return the next night. It was too risky to try to find her during the day. She just hoped the kids didn't do anything stupid, and experiment with the vials.
Mary was awoken by a loud screech, and was surprised to find a large Gryphon cawing in her face. At first she thought it was just a strange dream, but she quickly realized that one of the kids had tried the vials. The creature continued to yell at her frantically, obviously trying to communicate. But she couldn't understand what they were saying. The new gryphon's body looked different from hers, and she guessed the child had used a different combination of animals. Mary stamped her foot, and began to write into the dirt on the ground of her cave.
After a while, the child began to comprehend that Mary couldn't understand what they were trying to tell her, and the creature began to write in the dirt, too. Communication was still difficult. The new gryphon's front talons lacked the prehensile abilities that Mary had inherited from the monkey. But from what Mary could interpret, Amy was the one who had tried the vials.
Amy then frantically began writing one word over and over - Hunters.
Mary understood the threat, and walked to the edge of the cave and flapped her wings, indicating that they should fly away. Amy nodded her head, and followed Mary out of the cave, flapping her wings in unison with Mary.
Together they took off into the sky, just as the hunter's trucks reached the cave. The hunter's gawked at the strange creatures, too shocked to reach for their rifles and fire a shot. The only one more shocked than the hunters was John. He thought there was only one gryphon. So he didn't understand why there were now two in the sky, flying towards his farm. He decided he better go home and check on his sister.
