The Vials

The perfect horse

added by JosieHadley 7 years ago O

"Mary, Mary"

Mary was woken from her strange dream by the voice of a small child. She had dreamed that she was a horse, running wild and free in a field. She opened her eyes, and saw that she was in a pen in a barn. A large apple hovered in front of her face. She reached her muzzle forward and greedily gobbled it down.

She felt a small hand massaging her snout.

"Good, girl. Good Mary, " said Amy.

Mary turned her head to get a good look at the girl. She was dressed in a cotton nightgown, hanging on the side of her pen. Mary looked for the vial, but the only thing she had in her hands was another apple.

"Sorry, Mary. I knew my stupid brother wouldn't feed you, so I brought you a little snack. You must be so hungry. Here, have another, " said Amy as she fed her the other apple. The apple tasted so good that Mary almost forgot her displeasure at the girl for failing to bring the vial. Her tail wagged, as the girl began to pet her again.

Suddenly, she shook her head and stamped her foot.

"What is it? What's the matter, girl?" asked Amy.

Mary didn't like the way that Amy talked to her. She was treating her like an animal, like just another one of her horses. Slowly and with much effort, she scribbled a single word in the dirt. It was barely legible, but Amy could read it - vial.

"Oh, they're safe. But you don't get one. At least not yet. Not until you've earned one, " said Amy with a smile.

Mary was outraged. She whinnied angrily, and stamped her hooves. Some of the other horses woke, and took notice.

"Don't get huffy with me, young lady. It's your own fault. You were bad, and now you need to be punished. You lied to me, " said Amy sternly. "Now if you behave yourself, and act like a good horse, I will let you be human again soon."

Mary ducked her head and frowned. The little girl had trapped her. No one except Amy knew about the vials. She was the only one who could return her to human form, and Amy knew it. She was at Amy's mercy.

Amy sensed her sadness and sighed. "Sorry, Mary, but riding down the mountain I realized something. You make the perfect horse! You and I worked so well together, since you can understand me and everything. Honestly, I would like to keep you this way forever. But I will let you go, I promise. Maybe after that horse contest coming up. I always enter, and I always lose. But with a horse as smart as you, I am sure to impress the judges, " said Amy with excitement.

Amy saw a light flip on in her house.

"Sorry, Mary. I have got to go. If Mom finds out that I snuck out here, she'll kill me. Or maybe not let me play with you tomorrow. We'll have a lot of fun. It will be great. You'll see, " said Amy, as she waved and ran out of the barn.

Mary was left alone with the horses again, more frightened than she had ever been. She had always had hope before, but now she was truly trapped and at the mercy of a small child. Amy was a sweet kid, but Mary knew the temptation she must be feeling. Mary quietly pondered what to do next.
