Live with your new vagina

"So what's it like having a vagina?" asks Gene.

You're completely puzzled as to why Gene is suddenly asking you this now. He's known you for a while, after all. You've told him about it before. But you answer him. "Well, I'm different, but it's still something that lots of people have. It's not as if tampons were invented just for me."

"Do you ever wish you had a penis?"

"Do you ever wish you didn't, Gene?" you reply? "I mean, I guess I have to think about my vagina more than you do about your penis because I know that not a lot of guys have one but aside from that, I don't have any particular reason to want to change my own body."

"Are people surprised when they find out?"

"Of course, Gene. Remember when you found out? You were shocked."

"I was?"

"Yeah, I asked you out. You said you weren't gay, then I told you about the vagina. You thought about it but you were going out with Melissa at that time."

"That never happened. I just used the flashlight on you. You must have thought it didn't do much because you already had a vagina. But you didn't before I used the flashlight."

Could all your memories be false? It is pretty strange that you have a vagina, you have to admit. "I don't know. I guess that's possible. But even if you did, I don't feel like I've changed, and I don't remember any changes. If I didn't really have a vagina, I may as well have one, because that's all I've known and it's all that the entire world has known too. If you really did change me--and I'm not saying you did--you need to accept that this is me now, not some kind of not real version of me."

Gene thinks about that. "All right," he says, "if you are you... let me see what you are like now. How about I accept that offer. Let's go on a date."

You're very happy. You've been attracted to Gene for a long time but he was with Melissa and they only broke up recently. It occurs to you that if you really have been changed your memories of being attracted to him may have been fake, but like you told him, even if your world is changed, what you are is real now. "Of course." Then Gene....

What do you do now?

• says "Hey, there's my brother. Try it on him." (Even though Gene'll forget you tried)
• says "Hey, there's Melissa. Try it on her." (Even though Gene'll forget you tried)
• says "Maybe if we hold the light at the same time when using it, both of us can remember."
• borrows the light to use on a bystander. You don;t notice that the bystander....
