The fall

added by The Brilliant Dr. Garfield 7 years ago O

Looking up at the lamppost in disappointment, and the paths twisting off to the left and to the right, you decide to double back, Swiftly turning left, you plant your right foot down... into nothing.

A step, dew-covered hill is where you've put your foot. But it's on an incline. Yelling, you try to grab anything that may stop your fall, but nothing presents itself. You tumble backwards, arms pin wheeling, and land hard on your side. Grunting as the wind is knocked out of you, you tumble down the hill, rolling and turning faster and faster as you fall. Scenes flash by as you roll: the dew-covered grass, the bluish night sky with the white crescent moon, and a steep hill that seems to go on for miles.

You tumble and fall for another two minutes before you hit something hard. Something in your left leg cracks. Your eyes snap open and you scream, loud and long. You lay there, looking straight up at the night sky for God knows how long. After a while, whimpering, you look down and see your right ankle twisted at the wrong angle, your Adidas-clad foot turned almost completely around. It appears you have hit a large rock. "Help..." you mumble. A single tear rolls down your cheek as you bite your lip hard enough to draw blood. Pain is constantly shooting down to your cracked ankle, and it's apparent there's no way out of where you are...

You look around. Looking up, you see the top of the hill far above you, a feeble glow emitting from the lamps. Looking to the left, you see you've landed at the shore of a small pond, full of lily pads and flowers. Frog croaks and cricket chirps echo from the middle of the bond, creating a defeating night noise. The moon reflects off the dark blue water and illuminates the trees on the other sides of the pond. If your leg wasn't broken and you had your phone, you'd have taken a picture of it. A dirt path sits a few feet above the shore on a berm, but there are no lamps here: just you, the moon, and the pond.

You decide to try and get up. Grimacing, You put all your weight on your right leg and your hands on the rock to steady yourself. You lift your left leg up feebly and manage to put some weight on it. The pain is unbearable. You scream again and collapse on the shore. Your leg hurts too much to even try to stand up. Sobbing at your misfortune and the fact that you're lost, you resign to your fate and stare up at the night sky full of stars. Strange sounds emit from the trees sometimes, but nothing, not even a fly, approaches you. After two hours, it is completely dark and you're so exhausted from your whole ordeal that you fall into a fitful slumber, occasionally overcome by hazes of pain.

Sometime later in the night you hear quiet footsteps echoing from the path behind you. You're suddenly gripped with fear at being found like this and close your eyes, pretending to be asleep or passed out. The footsteps get closer and closer, and soon they stop about twenty feet behind you. Whoever (whatever?) was walking just saw you. The footsteps quicken and soon you can hear it breathing on the berm right above you. More footsteps are accompanied by sliding dirt sounds, they're coming down the slope to inspect you. You close your eyes even tighter. You can hear it's breathing as it stands over you. Suddenly, you feel pressure on your right ankle and it being lifted up. Whatever has found you is dragging you out of here. You feel yourself being dragged up the slope and onto the berm. It sets your ankle down and pauses, as if resting, and picks it up again.

Your arms trailing above your head behind you, you are dragged away into the night by an unknown helper as you fall asleep again.
