The Four Giggling Girls

Held Back

added 19 years ago O

Diane thought, since she was 11-year-old, that she would be in a sixth grade class. Instead the man took her to a different classroom.

"Kindagawten?" asked Diane.

"Yes," said the man. "I've made it so that you've been held back five times. Because of your speech problem, you have academic problems. So you haven't been able to pass kindergarten." Then the man changed the subject. "Have a nice day in kindergarten, Diane. I'll be here to pick you up after school. Oh, and I packed a diaper in your backpack in case you wet."

"Duz evwee won no abowt me warin dipoos?" asked Diane.

"Your entire class," said the man. "So don't feel embarressed." Nevertheless, Diane blushed as the man went away.

"Hello, Diane," said the teacher. "Please come into class."

Diane went into the class. The teacher took the backpack from Diane and put it onto the hook.

"I'm not smart, huh?" though Diane as she went to her desk. "I bet I'll pass this class with flying colors."

"We're going to learn to read some words today, class," said the teacher. "I'm going to write a word on the board. Can any one read it? How about you Sarah?"

A small girl said, "It says music."

"Very good," exclaimed the teacher. Then she wrote another one. "What about this one? Diane, can you read this? I know you have a reading problem."

"Reading problem? Yeah right." Diane thought. She looked at the board, but all she saw were scribbles. Diane almost fell out of her chair. She couldn't read!

"Sowy, miss," Diane said. "I cant."

Diane though the teacher would say, "That's okay, Diane. You tried."

But instead, the teacher shouted, "Diane! I can't believe this. You are eleven-year-old and you still can't read or write or even talk correctly. All your classmates are reading and most can write sentences. I won't be surprised if you are held back again next year."

"It's not my fault!" Diane thought to herself. "I know I can read and write and speak correctly."

Anyways, the teacher asked someone else (the word was "cat"). Diane felt really stupid and hoped that this day would soon end. She really regretted ever teasing that fat man.
