The bell broke the silence as the door closed shut, the jingle echoing through the dusty, dank shop. Many shelves were just about visible in the dim halogen light, stretching back towards the rear of the store, their outlines defined by the light coming from the store room at the rear.
Phil looked around the room, his eyes struggling to adjust to the poor light. It was his wedding anniversary - he had been married to Jane for 5 years now - and he'd completely forgotten to get her a present. He had the token flowers, movie and chocolates sorted, but returning without anything approaching a present was a sure-fire recipe for disaster. Somehow, he'd found his way to the eclectic side of town, home to all the small strange businesses that somehow stayed in business despite the best machinations.
The shop he had entered was fairly nondescript - a small A-board outside simply mentioning 'anniversary gifts' had caught his eye, largely out of desperation more than anything...
"Can I help you, sir?" came a voice from behind Phil. He spun around and noticed the small man behind the counter, smiling at him in the dim light.
"Yeah, I'm in a bit of trouble - I need an anniversary present for my wife. I've been so busy that I completely forgot..." said Phil, clearly upset.
"I see. Would sir like to browse my wares? If you have any questions about the items, do not hesitate to ask!" said the man, beckoning to the many shelves.
Phil, unsure but knowing he was completely out of options, ventured into the store...
