Calypso and Calliope were very important for the scientist at Horizon Labs. Of course, one was typically considered important if they had two heads. Originally, the two-headed anaconda was chosen to be the first test subject in Project Chimera. But once it was discovered that animal DNA from radically different species canceled each other out dramatically, the whole project was dropped. Nevertheless, Calypso and Calliope were valuable and were brought back from Brazil anyways.
But there was another possible use of the conjoined twin serpents besides simply uplifting them. As part of a deal with Nutra Pharma Corporation, Horizon Labs received DNA samples from the preserved body of a rat snake named "We". Not was "We" also two-headed, but it was also a functional hermaphrodite even if it has never successfully been bred. Because the snake DNA was similar enough, it was easy to extract the mutated gene that caused "We" to possess both male and female genitalia and give it to Calypso and Calliope.
Whether or not the procedure would cause a change in sex, it was clear that the anaconda needed to be uplifted. Two-headed snakes did not have very long lifespans. The main reason is that the two heads had to share a single esophagus and eating with both heads could cause the snake to choke. Calypso and Calliope showed a lot of sluggishness that showed that their health was not at their best.
But even if the anaconda wasn't in optimum condition, the two heads did tend to lash out at anyone who got too close. And those two heads made it a lot harder to sneak up on. Fortunately, Calypso and Calliope were easy to placate by giving them enough food of moderate proportions so that the large snake would enter a dozing, digestive state. As soon they were docile, the scientists proceeded with the experiment. A syringe filled with the Animalia virus coupled with the hermaphrodite gene was injected into the base of each head, giving the twin-headed serpent a healthy double dose. After that, all that was left to do was watch and see which way the uplifting process went.
