"... the next thing, the next animal you think of, well, that's you for... basically the rest of your life," Kate finished flatly before she managed the best fake smile she could.
Both boys were slack jawed, still feeling a heavy sweat through their shirts and pants.
"What are you saying? Are for real?" Tom asked, rubbing his eyes and blinking them to try and remove the blur.
"I know it sounds a fit odd, or just unbelievable, but believe me it's the truth. The animal you think of, you'll change into. I'm really sorry, but try to think of something you want, okay? I won't feel as bad. And nothing like a whale or fish. That would be bad for everyone involved," she chuckled, looking the two over who still had stupefied faces.
"This can't be real..." Matt said in trailing thought that was devoid of much anything.
"Animals? Tom repeated, still suspicious. "I... you gotta be, crazy." His voice had a tremble of it as thoughts did start to creep in his mind, though still lacking a real form.
"I have an uncle with a big farm so that will take care of most things. Sorry again," she repeated with just a shrug. "If you could get to it, that would be nice. Still gotta get my boyfriend. You'd really think I'd know the floor by now."
Tom and Matt heard her but didn't listen, as they could feel their hearts beating out of their chest and Kate's words, though chilling and unthinkable, were the truth. Tom turned and looked back at Matt who was at a loss for words, despite both their minds racing.
