Once upon a time, during the beginning of Earth, numerous kingdoms were made, each being ruled by kings or queens and their children, the heirs of the throne.
Each kingdom was prosperous, and most of them were not in the middle of wars with others, mostly because they had a common fear that forced them to end such battles. That fear was not the punishment of their deities or the attacks of creatures like vampires or werewolves.
It was about giant reptilian creatures, dragons.
These beings formed territories around forests or caves near a selected kingdom, targeting the wealthiest ones, terrorizing citizens near countrysides by eating their livestock, and even burning entire villages without any mercy, destroying homes and separating families. Attempts to stop or kill the beasts only ensued their anger, attacking the capitals of the kingdoms, destorying castles, stealing fortunes and even kidnap the prince or princess of the king and queen.
While humanity never understood the point of stealing the heirs of the throne, some scholars suggested that the kidnapped prince or princess acted as some form of trophy or as a lure to send more knights, mages and even priests to meet their ends at the jaws of the creature, or even become their slaves. Some knights and even farmers who managed to sneak inside the territory said that they witnessed dragons perfoming their magics on the kidnapped heir, or even mating with them which lead to a painful transformation into another dragon.
After multiple attacks in different kingdoms, the nobility started to send livestock, treasure and even sacrifing other nobles and even their children to the dragons, in order to appease them. Some even going so far to see them as their gods, worshipping them.
However, not all the dragons were the same brutal beings that rampaged through villages and towns, some were peaceful, and even acted as some form of protectors to kingdoms, joining them in wars, acting as guardians to the children of the king and queen, the soon to be queen or king even selecting the respective benevolent dragon as their consort or spouse.
The dragons had different appearances, from the colour of their reptilian eyes and scales to their wings, and even to their form. Some had three heads and could breathe ice or a poisonous fog, others resembled winged serpents, and so on.
Now, the land is still under turmoil caused by those creatures, who are you in this cruel time?
