Rose headed toward the kitchen and dialed the number for the CDC and the Monster Department only to get the same computerized system. She went through the process of reporting the number of people transforming and the type of changes taking place. She then dialed Professor Smith’s, she picked up on the 4th ring.
“Rose?” inquired Doctor Smith’s voice, wherever she was it was very load.
“Yes, Professor I thought I would let you know we had some more changes here.” Explained Rose “And I was hoping that we could get someone to come and do blood tests so that we can know for sure what those who are turning are becoming and that…”
“Sorry, that isn’t going to happen.” announced Professor Smith “We are about to pull out.”
“What?” inquired Rose shock.
“The CDC and the Monster department is about to pull out of this city.” Explained Professor Smith with a heavy heart. “It has been determined that the resources here would be better used in a larger city. Since the President announced the increase in the infection rate there has been major rioting and so they are moving staff to those cities to help. I am getting on a Helicopter bound for Cleveland in 20 minutes.”
“But what about us?” inquired Rose
“You haven’t seen the news have you.” stated Professor Smith as a call of alarm came from the living room. Rose rushed in to see breaking news along with images of the US capital building on fire with crews working to put it out as armed men fired into crowds on the Mall.
“My God.” Stated Rose as it changed to show more riots breaking out across the nation and the world. Big Ben in London had fallen into the river and was burning.
“Sorry but we need to focus on the larger cities.” stated Professor Smith “The Local police seam to be able to keep order for the moment at least. We haven’t had any rioting and the University has it’s own solar farm to keep the town power grid up. Consider yourself lucky.”
“How…how bad?” inquired Rose
“Well I can’t see what you’re watching, but word is some religious groups have started killing infected people to prevent the spread.” Stated Professor Smith as she paused for a moment. “Some governments are starting to do the same thing in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East and you don’t want to know what is rumored to be happening in China.”
Rose gulped.
"What signs do you have?" inquired Professor Smith
"Well Taylor has a horn growing from her forehead, Amanda has two lumps on either side of her head and Monica has scales on her hand." stated Rose while still watching the news.
"Well Amanda is growing horns and there are so many monsters with horns it is impossible to tell based on that alone. As for Monica she could be becoming anything with scales and that is a lot of monsters, that is impossible to tell either." stated Professor Smith "Now Taylor, not many monsters have a single horn in the center, likely she is becoming one of three things."
"And they are?" inquired Rose
"A unicorn, a unicorn centaur or a unicorn furry." stated Professor Smith as someone called her name on the other end. "Sorry I need to get going."
"Good luck." said Rose
“Make sure to call your families soon, don’t know how long the communication and power grid will be up. Good luck be safe.” reassured Professor Smith as she ended the call. For a while Rose just stood there watching the news and then heard helicopters flying overhead.
