Kendall looked skeptically at Josie for a moment.
"What about the other way?"
Josie furrowed her brow.
"What? What are you talking about?"
"I stay. Connie goes back to being Connor. I know he misses being a man a lot more than I miss being a woman-"
By now Josie's face was starting to contort in anger.
"I told you, she doesn't deserve you-"
Kendall cut her off, his voice calm but surprisingly firm.
"You're wrong."
Josie goggled at him. He continued.
"Listen. If what you're saying is true I realize you can do a lot of damage to us at this point. I'm not trying to make you mad. You clearly have some grudge against Connie...Connor...whichever. You may even be justified in it. She can be a bitch, and he could be a son of a bitch."
Kendall's face softened, then, thinking of Connie, of the babies.
"But...I love my wife. I really do. I know she's unhappy with our life, and I don't blame her. I'd happily give up my chance for her. But I won't leave her, Josie. Not now, not ever, not willingly. That's what love is."
Josie just stared at Kendall like he was speaking Attic Greek. He smiled again.
"Anyway. Thanks for the offer. I'd ask you to maybe help us out, but I don't want to push my luck. Thanks anyway. See you around, Josie."
And he pushed his cart away to pick up a few more things, leaving Josie standing there, staring at his back.
After a while she seemed to snap out of her days, and huffed in frustration.
"Well what the hell am I supposed to do with THAT?!"
