Before Oliver can start looking for the ring, Crystal returns with water. Like before, Oliver gets caught up playing. He giggles happily as he, Eric, and Crystal play in the sandbox. Once again, he only snaps out of it when he feels a strange sensation in his diaper. This time, he recognizes it immediately. The warmth spreading can only mean one thing: he’s wet himself.
“I couldn’t find his parents,” Crystal’s mom says, worry in her voice as she rejoins them. She picks Oliver up. His diaper squishes. “Ooh, you need another new diapy, don’t you?” Oliver stifles a sigh as he lets himself get changed by a woman he doesn’t know for the second time.
“Mommy, what’s going to happen with Olly, since you can’t find his parents?” Crystal asks as her mom wipes Oliver down.
“Well, sweetie, an abandoned child is something to call the police about,” Crystal’s mom replies. Oliver shivers, both at the realization that the police are going to be called and the coldness of the wet wipes. Crystal’s mom tapes on a fresh diaper. “So I’m going to do that right now. Once I tell them about Olly, they’ll give me some instructions.”
“Okay.”
“Keep playing with him,” Crystal’s mom instructs. Crystal nods. She takes Oliver back to the sandbox. Oliver can’t get caught up in playing like before, however. He’s too nervous about the police being called. But he can’t do anything about it. He can’t even leave without being seen.
After speaking on the phone for a few minutes, Crystal’s mom walks over. Crystal looks up.
“What did the police say about Olly?” she asks.
