Mike had no time to think, or else he might have thought of something a bit safer. All he could do under the circumstances, though, was press the button on the gun, and hope he could find a way to disappear.
Well, He disappeared from view all right. The gun, still set to “shrink,” reduced him way, way down in size. Whereas he had been maybe half an inch tall before, now he was probably a millimeter tall. The bow on the woman’s shoe, which had been big enough to give him a handhold before, now was the height of a tall building. Mike looked up, and he gasped: the woman's leg seemed to climb into infinity. He could barely grasp the concept of anything above her ankle, which seemed to soar into the heavens.
The whole world was beyond Mike at this point, which is why he didn’t hear the people gasp again at his disappearance. His hostess said, "I think I need a drink."
"I'll join you," said a man next to her. "I just...this is too weird."
The two of them started walking away, discussing the incredible oddity they just saw. Was it a miracle? A scientific breakthrough? A publicity stunt? They didn't know. Nor did they realize that Mike hadn't disappeared completely. He was just barely able to hang on after the first few steps on the woman's shoe, eventually managing to work his way to a stitch under the bow where he could secure himself for half a second to think.
As the woman started up the stairs to the bar, her toe lightly kicked one of the stairs ahead. She didn't even notice, but it sent an earthquake through her shoe. Mike was shaken by the impact, and he found himself slipping.
