"Is that two of anyone's turns or two of mine?" wondered Tobi.
"Two of yours," responded the game board's display. At least the game made it easy to look up rules.
"In that case we should wait. I have something that would help but you wouldn't like it," offered Lissy. "See if you can get out by rolling."
Tobi was glad enough to be spared a horrible transformation (he didn't want to ask what it was) and handed the dice to Bob.
"The wolf card says I can use it to try to sniff out the map. I have to roll a 2 or less," said Bob. He rolled a 3. "You waste a turn wandering, but encounter no traps," said the board. "At least I dodged a bullet." Now he handed the dice to Dina. He was still attracted to his ex-girlfriend and the mermaid form made her even more appealing, but guilt kept him from sitting near her after she had gained a tail.
"Roll 5 or less to swim upstream out of the rapids," challenged the board. It wasn't much of a challenge for a mermaid. Dina rolled a 4. "See?" Mary said. "These transformations help us out!" She gave her wings a little flap for emphasis.
"Maybe they do," smiled Dina. She threw down a card. "I'm playing 'swap transformation' on Mary. I get your wings, and the card says the target has to choose which of my transformations you get. Which will it be, the ears or the tail?"
Mary frowned and said, "Fine. I'm nowhere near water, so it has to be the ears." Suddenly her wings started to shrivel, and soon her back was unadorned, but still bare thanks to her shredded shirt.
Next, Dina's rabbit ears shrank and moved back down to the sides of her head. Just as quickly, the appeared on Mary's, for the second time that night.
Finally, Dina shivered, then screamed as two bulges tore out the back of her shirt and exploded into feathery wings. She was now a winged mermaid, with the remains of her shirt barely hanging over her chest.
