Treated Like a Girl

Jacob manages to avoid any diaper changes or checks somehow. She even manages to avoid accidents; she wets her diaper, but that’s because she was worried she would be found out if she used the potty. In fact, Jacob is actually enjoying herself. So she’s disappointed when she has to take a break from playing to have snacks.

Snacks consist of chocolate pudding and grape juice. Jacob is confident in her ability to eat and drink without causing messes, but she quickly discovers this confidence to be misplaced. She spills juice and pudding all over herself.

“Silly boy,” Luke says, laughing. “Finish your snack, then we’ll get you in something else.”

“But my cwoves,” Jacob says.

“We’ll wash them. It’s not a problem, buddy.”

Jacob finishes her snack. As promised, Luke brings her over to a changing station and removes her clothes.

“Oh, you have a wet diapy!” he says. “I was only going to change your clothes, but you clearly need a diapy change, too.” Before Jacob can protest, Luke removes her diaper. He frowns. “Hmm.” Other than the soft hum, however, he doesn’t comment on Jacob actually being a girl.

Luke wipes Jacob down and puts her in a fresh diaper, which is pink and patterned with princesses. Then, he dresses her. But to her consternation, he doesn’t put her in boy clothes, or even something gender neutral like a onesie. He puts her in an adorable, poofy, pink dress. Her matching diaper peeks out from under it.

“Don’t you look cute,” he coos. He pokes her nose. “Stay right here, sweetie.” Luke goes back to the front desk, where he talks to the receptionist for a few minutes. He returns with a nametag for Jacob. “The receptionist misheard your name, Jaclyn, and thought it was Jacob. But I’ve got a nametag for you with your real name.” He puts the nametag, reading “Jaclyn”, on the front of Jacob’s dress.

Jacob, now Jaclyn, assumes that she has been mistaken for a toddler named Jaclyn that sometimes attends the daycare. Luke picks her up and brings her over to a group of toddler girls playing with dolls.

“Go ahead and play with the other girls,” Luke says, setting her down. “You don’t need to play with the stinky boys, now that we know you’re a girl.” He walks away.

Jaclyn isn’t pleased. She doesn’t want to play with the girls. Playing blocks with the boys was the only way she felt better about being turned into a girl. And she’s also not happy that the daycare worker clearly has some outdated opinions about gender roles.
