The fire roared to life with the flick of Renee's lighter as the twilight began to completely darken above the two. Alisa kneeled next to Renee as the full moon revealed itself over the forest treeline.
Alisa was the first to relieve her cramped feet, slowly sliding her boots off and setting them aside, pale toes splaying and flexing in the firelight. Her curving toenails glinted slightly, longer than she'd remembered. Renee followed suit with a sigh of relief as she pulled her feet free, her own toenails looking much the same, curving and almost sharp.
"You know," Renee mused, "I think I look... better... since coming here."
"Really?" Alisa asked, "That's such an odd thing to say."
"It's odd but it's true, isn't it? You didn't look nearly this good when you arrived or you'd be off on one of the party places on the island. I know I would have."
Alisa pondered that a moment before answering.
"Yeah," she said with a heavy sigh, "you're probably right."
"It's nothing to be ashamed of," Renee said with a grin that revealed strangely prominent canines, "I'd say we're having more fun here anyway."
Alisa returned the grin, scratching at her ears oblivious to their writhing at her touch, twitching and tapering to points.
"Okay," she said, "that I can agree to."
The moon continued to rise. Bit by bit, Alisa's coppery locks loosened from their braids. Renee's own black tresses grew progressively more unkempt, hanging down to the small of her back. Before long the pale nubs of the paladin's ears poked puckishly from her dark hair.
She turned to look at Alisa with piercingly intense golden eyes.
"I don't feel much like sleeping, you?"
