With a shaking hand, Deirdre dialed 9-1-1 on the phone. It rang several times without an answer; Deirdre was puzzled and on the verge of total panic; they SHOULD have answered by now. Finally,an operator came on the line.
"What is your emergency?" The operator asked, her voice impersonal, of little comfort to Deirdre.
"My next door neighbor is trying to break into my house!" Deirdre said. "I don't know what he's going to do...send help!"
"Ma'am...are you...in heat?" asked the operator.
"Am I WHAT??" Deirdre replied, sure she'd misheard.
"In heat...in season," the operator repeated. "You know how the males are when the moon gets full."
"What the FUCK are you talking about, lady?" Shouted Deirdre.
"Oh...you're new in town," said the operator. "I'll send officers right over. You stay right there. Thank you."
Deirdre sat huddled behind the couch, now terrified. What the hell was going on?
