Suddenly, I felt some really strong hands grab me from behind. “Hey!” I struggled, squirming, my feet kicking at the air as I was lifted up, but the pair of very large male centaurs on either side of me had me well under their control.
“And now that we’ve shown you, you obviously can’t leave,” said Selina pleasantly. “Sorry about that.”
“You could have just asked me not to talk!” I cried, squirming.
“And do you really think that would work?” she said. “Do you know how hard it is to hide? How hard it is to be another species in a human world? You humans shoot at each other just for having slightly different names! What do you think your people would do if they found us?”
“Then why were you going to my school!?” I said. “You could have just stayed hidden!”
She shook her head. “The only way for us to survive is to keep tabs on you, to know what you’re like and what you’re doing. Everyone in this village went to a human school. Four years of high school are mandatory, but some stay longer. Jack, behind you? He’s got a master’s degree in American history.”
I frowned. “So what are you going to do with me?”
“Well — there are choices,” she said. “That’s really up to you.”
