Alexa tried her best to push the meeting with that weird woman out of her mind and keep it there and tonight was the perfect chance to do so, gaming night. She wasn't much of a gamer herself, but Flint certainly enjoyed them and so she often humored him by being his designated Player 2 or just watching him while playing single player. Over the last couple of weeks the former was the case, as they played through a whole game together in co-op and were now approaching the finale.
Alexa had forgotten the name, but it was a cutesy, little game about a pastel puffball that traveled through a magical land to save his friends from being controlled by a big bad villain. It may have been her first game from that franchise, but Alexa had lots of fun supporting Flint by taking control of the various friend characters. While many of the creature designs tended to be on the fantastical or straight up weird side, nothing in that game had yet managed to trigger her fantasies, so that was a plus too.
Flint himself was certainly excited to reach the finale, explaining that this series was known for having great and bombastic finales, and Alexa was excited because he was. They made themselves comfortable on their couch and resumed playing from their last save point right at the beginning of the last world.
That place was certainly a stark contrast to the rest of the game, replacing the bright colors with a dark and dreary atmosphere. It did kinda fit considering the reveal of the villains being a sort-of doomsday cult. She was certain the game was rated E for Everyone. As they advanced and the areas only became sinister she voiced her concerns to Flint, who tried to dissuade her worries by saying this was par of the course for this series.
One boss rush later they came face to face with the villains’ leader, a surprisingly average-looking guy in a coat, who quickly went down through the power of friendship and co-op being generally overpowered. Alexa let out a small breath, thinking they had beaten the game, only for Flint to suddenly tell her not to celebrate too early.
Just as he called, the villain suddenly rose again and sacrificed himself to start the ritual to summon the cult’s god without any of the player characters stopping him. A giant ball of energy formed in the middle of the screen, before everything went white.
When asked what was going on, Flint finally explained. Despite being very kid-friendly from the outside, this series was known for having finales that either went surprisingly dark or extremely trippy with final bosses ranging from god-like beings over weird abominations to downright eldritch horrors.
“Oh,” was Alexa’s reaction, her brain not having caught up with this information yet.
A mysterious silhouette appeared on the white screen and piece-by-piece the final boss’ true form was revealed.
‘Oh No!’ was Alexa’s reaction when her brain did finally process all the information.
