"...To marry King Morgan, of course! To seal the alliance between our two countries." He looks at you anxiously. "You... you do remember King Morgan, don't you?"
"I..." You hesitate. You kind of don't want to disappoint this poor guy. You also don't want to blow your cover. Gods know what they'll do to you if they think you're impersonating a princess.
But you're also not eager to marry a guy you've never met. Especially when you're not actually a girl.
"I don't... think so." You swallow.
"Oh... no." The Mayor puts his hands over his face, and groans deeply. You lift a hand, but hesitate, not sure if you would be breaching some protocol by touching him. Then he sighs and rallies himself.
"Well, you'd best come along to the castle anyway," he tells you with a ghastly forced smile. "Guards!" Several men in red tabards and mail stand forward. "Escort us to the castle to meet with His Majesty. You --" He points to one of them. "Run ahead and let them know that we're coming -- that the Princess has miraculously arrived!"
"Yes sir!"
"If you will come with me then, Your Highness?" he asks as the guard runs off. You nod woodenly, wondering how this will end. The two of you walk along, the guards holding the crowd away. You notice that many of the people around you seem a bit taller than you remember -- you've either lost height, or most of the people here are just really tall. You suspect, given your gender change, that it's the former.
"Can you... tell me anything?" you ask tentatively.
"Hm?"
"You've been expecting me, but I'm not sure how I arrived here. I don't... have any memory of leaving... Camael...?" Yes, you're sure that was the name of the place he mentioned. Thinking about it, you seem to remember a beautiful town, slender spires decorated with amber? Home.
You frown at the thought. The Mayor assumes you are just upset at your loss of memory, and hastens to explain.
"You departed from Camael a month ago. It should have taken a mere two weeks to arrive by carriage, but you did not arrive. The King sent out scouts, but all they found was the wreckage of your convoy and one injured guard trying to drag himself here. He said you had been ambushed by bandits, a motley band of humans and orcs. And now you appear here, without any memory." He shakes his head. "A bad business. Something sinister is afoot."
It seems like he wants to say more, but though you wait for several minutes, he does not. "I'm sorry," you say at last, subdued. The thought of people dying makes you sick. And what actually happened to the Princess? Why do you look like her? How did you get here at all? You hug yourself.
"Oh, Your Highness, please don't blame yourself! Some foul malevolence has bedeviled our realm; you're as much a victim as anyone."
You nod. You're actually surprised he seems so accepting of you. Maybe he's just not looking a gift horse in the mouth. But in his place, you'd probably be suspicious that the "missing Princess" just poofed into the market two weeks after being kidnapped by bandits.
But you aren't going to bring it up if he isn't.
Soon the castle is filling your vision, a massive keep seated atop a hill in the centre of town, surrounded by courts and walls, and a moat which you cross on a drawbridge. You ascend up a zigzagging path through the various gates and wards, until you finally enter the main hall. The Mayor gestures a servant over and learns that the King awaits you in his chambers.
He puffs his way up a staircase ahead of you, then guides you down a short hallway. One of the attending guards knocks and announces you.
