You're a little surprised that Mary Lynn isn't keeping you for herself, but you figure it's probably all for the best if you get a change of scenery.
Unfortunately, the change of scenery isn't all that appealing. You're put into a "waiting room," which is basically a giant holding pen, tucked deep inside the black towers, with thousands of other guys. No one ever comes out and tells you what's going on, but you gather that the draft is going on 24/7, as makes sense for processing about three billion picks. As best you can tell, hundreds or even thousands of women are picking at once. The idea is that when a man gets selected, he goes into the middle of the room, which has a teleporter in it. Once the woman sees her new slave face-to-face, she can have his height adjusted, and then she's free to take him away.
You have plenty of time to come to terms with your situation. You're seriously expected to be in the waiting room constantly, except when you're going to the bathroom and for your shower every three days. You have room to sleep, but just barely, and not that comfortably. You're fed, if not well, and you're allowed plenty of reading material. You don't talk with the other male prisoners, as everyone's a bit too depressed to make much conversation. Some guys look suicidal, and you think others might be going insane. This really isn't fun for anyone.
You wait for weeks in there, and what seems like months. You try to calculate the odds that someone will be picked in the next day, or week, or month, but find it too depressing. While you're there, about ten guys get picked. You don't see what happens to them: they just go into the teleporter, a bright light flashes, and they vanish. Eventually, you reach the day when you follow them.
You're just sitting there reading a magazine, thinking about the world as it used to be, when you hear your name called on the giant loudspeaker. You jerk up from your resting position and start walking down to the center of the waiting room, which given its sheer size takes you a minute. You walk up to the teleporter and press your hand against the keypad outside. Once your identity is confirmed, you step inside and find yourself bathed in a blue light. Your skin starts to tingle, your hairs stand on end, and then, with a flash of light, you're gone.
Once your sight comes back, you see you're in an identical teleporter and in a very different room. It's small, with plenty of natural light. Apparently this is the post-selection room, where your height is adjusted. You have no idea where you are geographically.
You turn around, and see that there are only two of you in the room. Standing opposite you is your new owner...
