"Take a look at this," Maya calls you over to her microscope, so you get up from your seat and lean over the instrument, bringing it into focus. "Well?"
You frown in concentration and look again to verify that you are actually seeing what you think you are seeing. You turn and look at Maya, who is squinting at you in anticipation.
"Greg...got a minute?" you call out instead of replying. Greg puts down the vial he is inspecting and walks over. When he looks up from the microscope, all three of you know you have seen the same thing from the looks on each others faces.
"We checked the other samples," you say cautiously to Robin, the director of your facility, after you and your team have presented the data. "They all show a certain level of reversion. While the cocktail does not affect all cells, and it is difficult to predict which cells will be affected, this is the most promising results we have had since we began the research. As such...we were hoping to verify the effects on a test subject. It is the only way to know whether it stands a chance at affecting the brain, regardless of what it does to the body."
Robin does not respond, and silently inspects the documentation you and the team have provided. You are aware of Greg fidgeting behind you and Maya fiddling with her bracelet as she tends to do when she is nervous. Finally, Robin looks up at you through her horn-rimmed glasses.
"While this is encouraging, you are aware that there is a chance the test subject will be altered in such a way that may do irreversible damage?" Robin says sternly, but you can feel the excitement from your team even without looking at them. The director had just hinted that a test on one of the werewolf subjects was not out of the realm of possibility.
All of you know there is a good chance your test subject could die, or mutate into some unrecognizable creature. However, after two years of having watched loved ones reduced to that state, all of you were ready to take a risk. Anyway, it wouldn't be one of the people known to you that would be the test subject. There were many unidentified individuals who had been obtained for this purpose.
After all proper precautions are taken, such as immobilizing the test subject, Robin and your team watch as your new serum is administered to a random werewolf. Although the werewolf is sedated, as the serum begins to circulate through its bloodstream, you begin to see movement. The limbs spasm and contort, and to your dismay, the werewolf begins to foam at the mouth. It is almost as though it is going into a seizure. You want to look away in disappointment, but you are aware you need to note every change.
Although the werewolf is thrashing around, you frown as you look at its body. Something is off, or looks like it is altered from the normal werewolf form. It seems you are not the only one who noticed, as Greg takes a step closer to the glass and Maya cocks her head. The limbs seem to be losing muscle mass and reforming, and the muzzle appears to be flattening. You want to make eye contact with your team members but you can't look away from what is happening before your eyes. At long last, the spasms ease, and the creature that is no longer a werewolf lies still. There is still fur on the body, but the form is much less bulky and more humanoid, despite certain lupine aspects remaining, like triangular ears and a tail. However, your most important concern is whether or not the creature survived the treatment. Just as you are about to give up hope--
"Where am I?" you and everyone around you gapes as you hear a raspy voice ask.
