Nothing happened at first as the blanket surround him and Axel. He waited in both anticipation and anxiousness. His mind raced with all the reasons why this was a bad idea, but Darren remained still, not wanting to effect the magic, or whatever it was, of the blanket. He felt movement underneath the blanket and thought it was starting to work. A moment later, Axel's head popped out from underneath. His animal friend had an annoyed look. Darren knew that could only mean that Axel did not appreciate the extra heat being radiated back from the blanket.
A moment later, and Darren's eyes opened wide in shock. "No Axel! You're supposed to be completely under the blanket." However, Darren reacted too slowly. The sound of a soft poof blew out from under the blanket, and then Darren's face began to burn. Beside him Axel whimpered in pain as well.
He closed his eyes as the pain radiated around his entire head and neck. He felt his skull, his face warping. It was changing. His mouth felt like it was being pulled forward. His pointed nose pressed inward and softened. His neck and face tickled as new hair sprouted, seemingly everywhere. His ears burned and seemed to shift upwards along his skull. And then all at once, the pain stopped. He laid on his belly, panting from the ordeal, the transformation. "Thtu-peed! Tho.. Stupeed... Thorry Axel..." He said aloud, finding it difficult to speak words with his new changed mouth.
"Darrrren..." A rough voice, not his, answered.
Darren turned his head to see something else staring at him with one bright blue eye and one dark brown. "Axel!" He said aloud, finding it easy to say his animal companion's name. "How..." he started to say but stopped short. He knew, almost intuitively, what had happened. The blanket had merged him and Axel together, but because their heads were outside of the blanket, the merge was incomplete. Instead of fusing their heads and minds, they remained separate. Though they were both clearly changed, averaged.
Darren stared dumbfounded at Axel. His husky looked more human, looked more like himself. Axel's mussel was much shorter and wider. His nose was lighter but still clearly moist. Brown like fur, or hair, messily covered the top of his head. An intelligence seemed to stare back at Darren from behind the blue and brown eyes. His animal friend was always smart. Husky's were one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs, but there was definitely something more behind those eyes. A human-like awareness.
Darren suddenly became aware of how hot he was getting. He could not help but begin panting. This tips of his hand began to sweat as well. He turned his attention away from Axel and to his hand-paw. Darren was not sure what to call the appendage. It was covered in a thick white fur, and his nails were more pointed and white. A moment later, he realized that he only had one hand-paw. Panicked, he turned to his left to see Axel staring at his left hand-paw, slowly opening and closing it.
Almost intuitively again, he knew that Axel and him shared one complete body. Because both of their heads remained separate, their joint body was also divided between them. His panic subsided, and in its place, a giddy joy washed over him. Darren smiled and laughed out loud. Speaking with more clarity, he said "Well Axel, what do you think about spending the summer literally by each other's side?"
