Jane reached up and touched her face, her new perfectly manicured hand was actually shaking as she touched her now perfectly smooth skin. She couldn’t believe that this beautiful woman looking at her back from the mirror was actually her. Tears began to form in her eyes as she smiled and noticed that her teeth, which where always slightly off because when she was younger her family didn’t have dental insurance and the money to pay for dental trips where now perfect as well and white.
It was as if a dream she had had since she was a little girl had finally become true, with a body like this no one would ever call her plain Jane ever again. She could go out to a club and not disappear into a crowed, she could turn heads at a bar, she could get an actual boyfriend who she was actually sexually attractive to instead of just settling for.
The joy began to end when her mind became to wonder how this was possible. How a rash on her leg could cause all this.
She pulled back a bit and looked down, that is when she noticed she was clearly slightly taller than before, but the height wasn’t what caused her eyes to widen.
The doctors had placed her leg in a sort of removable walking cast with the spot with her rash wrapped and all but soaking in antibiotic creams as they worked to figure out what was happening.
The walking cast went up to her knee and it was still there however the rash…no it wasn’t a rash, scales which where still the same color as her flesh now covered her entire leg.
Jane was no longer caring about how well she now looked as she lifted up her hospital gown to see the scales went up to her hips on her right side and on her left side which had been clear of any rash now was covered from her hips down to her knee cap.
“My God.” said Jane as she stumbled back to bed and hit the call button.
Her breathing was heavy as she kept looking down at her legs.
It took a lot longer than she thought it should but in time a nurse, now wearing full face mask, plastic shield.
“My God.” Said the nurse as she saw what had happened to Jane.
“Get a doctor…” yelled Jane with fear in her voice.
“I can’t.” stated the nurse
“Why not, call them and get them here now.” ordered Jane
“They are here…however you aren’t the only one showing signs of whatever this is.” stated the Nurse as Jane’s eyes widened. “The CDC is on route as we speak, and the governor is having ordered a lock down and..."
Before the nurse could go on, Jane winced in pain as before both of their eyes her legs from the knee up began to fuse together. For the nurse it was just something she couldn’t believe she was seeing, while Jane felt bones moving and merging together. The walking cast broke apart as the scales quickly spread down over her lower legs as they too merged. Her ankles fused together as her legs grew out longer until they hung out over the bed. The nurse backed away as her feet turned to the side and expanded outwards into a large single fin.
Jane like the nurse were stunned as the flesh tone of her legs now her tail began to shift, becoming a green tone with yellow running around the edge of each of the scales making a rather beautiful pattern. The scales went up to her hips on her side while making a sort of V shape with the scales ending lower on her around her belly button. It wasn’t a hard edge instead where the scales turned to flesh, a sort of lime green membrane grew out. Suddenly the air felt really dry as Jane took a breath and noticed that the membrane moved a bit, it was gill outlets.
“Am…I a mermaid?” inquired Jane as she looked at what she seemed to have become.
