"I just finally decided I can't take it anymore," said Tony to the nice blonde girl beside him. He had been explaining that his life since high school hadn't turned out the way he'd hoped it would. He'd pinned all his hopes on making it big as a rapper, but instead of of getting famous by the age of 19, he was still working two fast jobs at 20. It was last week, at his wild and drunken 21st birthday party, that he realized everyone there was in college except him.
"I will not cook one more pan of french fries ever," he had told himself. At first, he had wondered if it might not be too late to finally get his diploma and maybe sign up for getting at least an associates degree somewhere. He decided it was too late, and he'd probably starve or get kicked out of his apartment if he didn't keep working his jobs. Maybe try welfare? Then he'd have to deal with his rowdy friends looking down on him even more. Move back in with his mom and his step-dad? Oh, they'd never let him hear the end of that. Besides, no matter where he ended up, he'd have people telling him what to do all the time and laughing at his failed music career. By the time he was almost seriously considering suicide, he'd found the flier for Illusia Kennels.
"You know," said Megan, the blonde girl, "we're still gonna have people bossing us around in this new career, if you wanna call it that. We're gonna be DOGS, Tony, and we'll have to be very obedient ones."
"I know that," he answered, "but at least I'll be doing something with my life for once. It's also not like anyone will know who I am, or, who I was, or who I thought I was gonna be. And it won't take years of some expensive boring school to do something other than flip burgers."
"AND we won't have to provide for ourselves anymore," Megan pointed out with a grin. "No more paychecks, no more rent, no more bills."
"Hell yeah!" said Tony with an equally wide grin. "Hard to argue with that after what I've been through."
They called Megan back for her intake meeting before Tony, so they waved to each other and she turned to leave the lobby. Tony held up his hip hop magazine as though he were going back to reading it, but instead he just watched Megan on her way out, particularly her long legs and tight ass. She was cute, he thought, and she obviously felt the same way about him. If they were still in control of their own lives, he'd hit her up for a date. It was hard to believe that none of them would even be human after a more days.
