June and Mark were still in the living room. Mark had settled into his recliner and was reading the newspaper. June wss sitting on the sofa, talking on the phone. She was apparently just wrapping up a call. She said "Goodbye," and set the phone down.
Lisa asked, "May we join you?"
"By all mean," said June. Lisa sat next to her, and Ty sat next to Lisa.
"That didn't go as well as we hoped," Lisa said.
June said, "I don't know your parents well, but Maria seemed very disconcerted. Well, they both did, but Maria more than Diego. That was Maria on the phone just now, asking me to meet her for lunch tomorrow."
"Oh!" Lisa said, surprised. "I'm not sure whether that's good or bad." She thought a moment. "My concern is that she might want me to break up with Ty. If she wants to see you, then she probably hasn't made up her mind yet."
"I'll do whatever I can to try to put her mind at ease," June said. She looked toward Ty. "Ty, I hope you'll forgive me for talking about you." She turned back to Lisa. "I don't believe Ty would ever do anything to hurt you or your parents. Even if he inadvertently did something bad, he would fix it." Ty nodded.
Mark said, "I completely agree."
Lisa said, "You don't have to convince me. I know that. It's what my mother thinks that worries me. My dad is probably willing to accept things as they are."
"For now, all I can suggest is to wait and see," June said, then looked to Ty, "and keep a low profile."
Ty nodded. "I already recognized that. No more magic in their sight for now."
Mark said, "I'm sorry that things haven't gone as well as you'd hoped, but your parents are smart and kind. Don't sell them short. I think things are likely to work out OK. It will just need a little time. It certainly did for us, and we didn't get the gentle introduction your parents did."
Lisa asked him, "Do you think it would help if you spoke to Diego some time?"
"I'm not sure," Mark said, "but if you think it may be worthwhile, I'm willing to try."
"Oh, thank you both!" Lisa said.
"Mark and I plan to go out to lunch later. Would you two care to join us?" June asked.
"That would be nice, thank you!" Lisa replied.
"I think we'll go do some of our homework now," Ty said, "if you'll please excuse us."
"Sure, go ahead," June said. "We'll let you know when we're ready to go out."
Lisa and Ty retreated to his room again.
