"Hi, mom. Hi, dad." A familiar voice speaks to them as they wake up in the morning. There is a well-groomed adult tabby cat sitting on the bed between them.
"Daniel?" His mother asks.
"Yep, it's me." He walks up to them, nuzzling his mother as a cat would.
"You're... a cat." His dad says, observantly. "A talking cat."
"Better than being dead. Thanks for not eating me, by the way." Dan purrs lightly as his mother idly strokes his head.
"And you're okay with this."
"Like I said, better than being dead. The guys at the council told me all about it when I was in the Realm of the Beyond. It was before my time, so they were obligated to send me back. The rules said they couldn't send me back human, so I opted to be a cat, so I can still live with my family."
"That's very sweet, Dan... you realize that your sister's trial for murdering you begins shortly?" Mother asks.
"Yeah, I've been looking forward to it since the moment I died. No offense, mom, dad, but I hope she pays dearly."
"I suppose she wasn't strong enough in will to use her power responsibly. I don't want to see her executed for your death, but I suppose the will of the council is just that."
"Oh, she won't be executed, the judge himself told me that. She's already been stripped of her power, and is at the mercy of the court. They even said they'd let me come, despite the humans-only rule since I have to testify."
"Against your own sister?"
"Yeah. I'm the only one who can testify as to how she killed me, after all. I have to, mom. It's the only way justice will be served." Dan hops off the bed, and begins walking towards the door. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to use the litterbox. Don't worry, I trained myself."
"But we don't have a..."
"We do now."
