John and Carrie followed the attendant into a long narrow side room, which had the look
of an enormous closet. Costumes and clothing sets of all sorts blanked every available
surface, giving the room an air of total disarray.
Carrie leaned over and picked out a yellow clown costume with purple pokadots, dropping
it back to the floor. "So we just pick any one of these?" she asked incredulously. That's
right, chirped the somewhat bored attendant. "Just pick one and we'll move on with the
process.
Carrie and John spent at least half an hour digging through the hundreds of costumes
spread around the room. Carrie was eying a shimmering pink princess's gown for a time,
but decided against it. Later, she even considered a slinky black spandex outfit with
a big lightening bolt on the front, but she was never a big fan of superhero stuff and
moved on in her browsing.
John too was suffering from an overabundance of choices. He liked the caveman get-up
he'd seen thrown in the room's far corner, but given the mess the room was in, he was
unable to find it after he moved on. John even noticed a merman's costume, complete
with trident, but decided it would be too difficult to get around with a fish tail.
