Michelle found herself in the back yard of their house, but the back yard as it had been years ago, the last time she had been an eight-year-old. She saw two human girls turning a rope, and a cat-girl (Jennifer?) jumping it. One of the girls turned to her and said "C'mon Michelle, play with us!"
Now she recognized the two girls turning the rope. They were Anne and Becky, her two best friends when she had been eight.
"No!" Michelle answered. "I don't play little girl games anymore. I'm too mature for that."
"You look like a little girl to me." said Becky.
Michelle was thinking about how her friendships had ended. Becky had put on fifty pounds at puberty, and Anne had become a brain girl who brought down straight A's, and in junior high Michelle had decided that they were holding her back socially. It took a while for Anne and especially Becky to get the message when Michelle stopped returning their calls or acknowledging them in public, but by high school Anne and Becky acted like complete strangers to her, which was just how Michelle wanted it.
But darn it, they looked like they were having fun! Just sitting here wasn't any fun at all! "Hey, will you let me play?"
"I don't know Becky." said Anne "This is just a game for little girls. And she said she was too mature."
"Why don't we ask Jennifer? Hey Jennifer." Anne and Becky stopped twirling the rope long enough for Jennifer to come to a halt. "Do you think we should let Michelle play with us?"
"Of course." Jennifer answered. "She's my sister."
Anne tossed Michelle the end of the rope and joined Jennifer in the middle. The four played girl games and laughed and joked together. "Why don't I have fun with my friends like this anymore?" Michelle thought to herself.
"Because you dumped us, duh." answered Becky.
"I'm really sorry! I'll do anything to make it up to you!"
"Well." Anne replied. "In the real world you're an eight year old catgirl, and Anne and Becky never knew a girl named Michelle their own age. But there is one thing you can do to make it up."
"Just tell me what it is!"
Becky answered. "You can be a good sister to Jennifer. She really needs a friend right now."
Jennifer came up and hugged Michelle. "Sisters forever?"
Michelle hugged her back. "Sisters forever" she muttered as she began to wake up.
