“Nah, I’d rather get some sleep,” Jake says with a yawn. Dean sighs as he watches some of the boys start to lift each other out of a window. “Are you gonna go?” Jake asks. “No, I guess I’ll stay too,” Dean says. Only a handful of the boys sneak out, the rest of them all get comfortable in their beds and fall asleep.
Jake wakes up the next morning to a light alarm sound. The boys all groan and start to wake up trying to remember where they were for a moment. Jake yawns and gives a groggy Dean a nod as he looks around. Many of the cots in the room hadn’t been slept it. “I never heard anyone sneak back in, did you,” Jake asks, but Dean shakes his head.
The man in red comes into the room with a smile on his face, “good morning gentleman, I trust you all had a good nights rest.” He walked down the center aisle and roused any stubborn boys who wanted to sleep. “So, if you’ll all get cleaned up and dressed in your uniforms, you can come out for breakfast. But don’t take too long, the park opens in two hours.”
The man walks back out of the bunkhouse, leaving the door wide open. The boys all open up their trunks and carry their uniforms to the shower stalls. Jake got showered and slipped his uniform over his clothes and zipped it up. He looked ridiculous with the tail and then the long eared cap on top. Boys mockingly brayed at each other as they walked out of the bunkhouse.
Outside, was a buffet table filled with food and the boys all were quick to grab what they could and eat. The man in red came by as they ate, “okay, eat up, the boat will be arriving in any minute.” And almost responding to his whim, a loud whistle blew. “Okay, gentlemen, it’s time to get to work. Follow me please.”
The boys all followed the man as he walked back toward the docks. As he did, he pulled boys aside and placed them at various stands and games, telling only that instructions were inside. “You two,” the man says pointing to Jake and Dean, “you boys will run the beer cart.”
“Beer?” Dean asks. The man nods and shows them the small wooden cart filled with beer kegs. “The instructions are right here. Good luck.” The man continued down the street with the boys. “Beer, this is so cool,” Dean laughs. “What do the instructions say,” Jake interrupts and reads. The simply say, pour as much beer to the guests as you can as fast as you can. If you need replacement kegs, flip the red switch. “Sounds easy enough, I guess,” Jake says.
Then they hear another whistle blow, followed by a roar. Jake and Dean look over and see a flood of teenage boys rush into the park. They quickly get in line for rides and grab food as they move into the park. Then suddenly, swarms of them hit the beer cart. “Come on donkeyboy, filler’up,” one shouts. Jake and Dean quickly get to work filling mugs with beer and handing them out. The new boys laugh at Jake and Dean as they fill up the mugs and run off into the park. The flood of boys never ends, and in a matter of an hour, their kegs are nearly empty. Jake flips the red switch on the cart and continues filling up mugs.
The boys are all going crazy all over the park. Pushing down the workers and taking over the games and rides. “This is insane, how are we supposed to handle this,” Jake yells to Dean. Then, another cart pulled by two donkeys comes up along side of them. Two boy workers jump off and quickly unhitch the donkeys and hook them to the empty cart. “Dean, come on, over to this one,” Jake calls, and the boys move to the new cart.
“Hey, hurry up with the beer,” some boys shout as Dean and Jake fill up mugs. The crowd never seems to stop, but there’s a slight lull in activity and Dean and Jake have a moment to catch their breath. “I can’t take this job any more,” Dean pouts,” how come we have to do all this work while they have fun?” “Well, it’s a job, it’s not supposed to be fun…” Jake trails off when he says a couple of the worker boys take off their uniforms and join the crowd of boys. “Hey, did they just quit?” Dean asks, “then I quit, too.” Dean unzips his uniform and throws the hat to the ground.
Are you coming Jake?
