Kat heard her mother say goodbye to 'Cathy' and smiled. Knowing what was happening to her bother just made her feel warm and happy inside. One of her friends started to get up and Kat imagined all of the fun they could have. Then her friend dropped to the ground with a thud. It sounded painful and Kat scrambled to get a better look at her.
"So. 'Cathy' huh?" Kat recognized the voice, it was her mother's. She turned, slowly, to see her mother standing in her doorway, wand in hand. When their eyes met she said, "There are no exclusions, Kat."
"Wh-what?" Kat was afraid and she couldn't be sure why. Something about her mother's tone, something about her mother's posture, something ... was frightening. She tried to tell herself that she shouldn't be afraid, her mother has specifically told her that she wasn't the kind of which that used magic for mean purposes, but for some reason that didn't help.
It was as if her mother could read her mind, because she waited until Kat's internal dialog was over before she answered. "There are no exclusions. That means that Cathy ... you know what? I don't like that name." Her wand glowed. "Danielle," she paused to listen to the sound of the name, then smiled and continued, "isn't excluded from being a witch. Every female in the family becomes a witch on her 18th birthday, no exceptions, no exemptions, no exclusions."
Kat somehow knew that Dan, whom she had renamed Cathy, was now named Danielle. She was beginning to realize that maybe it wasn't a good idea to mess with a witch's son.
"Now, Kat," her mother continued, "I have a problem. If every adult female in the family is a witch, and you have proven beyond all doubt that you can't be trusted with that kind of power, what am I supposed to do with you?"
