After a little while of window shopping, the sun started to set and the girls decided it was time to head home. They walked to where Lina had parked her car. The two of them had come straight from school in the same car. As Lina clicked her keychain remote to unlock the car, Amy opened the driver's door and began to step in.
"Woah, what are you doing, girl?" Lina gasped.
"Oh...uh," Amy paused. "I...guess I thought I was supposed to drive." She backed out and let Lina get in the driver's seat.
"Sweet of you to offer, but let me enjoy my new license a little, okay?"
As they drove to Amy's house, Amy couldn't shake the depressing feeling of leaving Lina for the evening.
Then Lina piped up. "Hey Amy, you want to have a sleepover at my place?"
"Funny you should say that," Amy said. "I was just about to ask if you wanted to stay at mine."
"That would normally work for me, but my parents are gone for the weekend, so if we stay at my place it'll just be the two of us."
"That'd be awesome," Amy said, trying to suppress her enthusiasm. "Would...um, would it be okay if we stopped at my place so I could...get my stuff?" Amy couldn't understand why she had so much trouble making this request of Lina.
"Of course. You didn't have to ask me so politely," Lina said, smirking.
After a quick stop at Amy's house, to tell Amy's parents where she would be for the weekend and to get an overnight bag together, the girls arrived at Lina's place. Lina unlocked the front door, and then Amy suddenly reached over in and opened the door for her, allowing Lina to step through first.
"I'll take your coat," Amy said. She gently pulled it off Lina and hung it on a nearby rack.
"Thanks, but I can do that myself," Lina said, trying not to sound ungrateful. "Just make yourself at home."
Amy dropped her bag in the guest bedroom upstairs and then joined Lina in her room.
Amy wanted to talk to Lina about plans for tomorrow, but she suddenly found herself asking "Can I get you anything? A snack?"
Lina looked over at Amy with a raised eyebrow. "No, thanks, Amy."
"Oh, okay."
Lina looked through the DVDs on her bookshelf.
"Hey, I've got an idea for tomorrow," Amy chirped. "There's a fair in the park we could check out."
"Okay," Lina droned, half-listening.
"So...you want to go to that?"
Lina snapped her head around to stare at Amy. "I'll make that decision later. Right now we're going to watch a movie."
"Um...all right," Amy said faintly.
Lina pulled a DVD off the bookshelf and barked at Amy to follow her downstairs. Amy obeyed, until she inexplicably veered into the kitchen while Lina continued to the living room.
A few minutes later, Amy came into the living room and handed Lina a bowl of popcorn and a glass of water. "Here you go," she said.
"Oh Amy, you didn't have to do that!" Lina said with surprise.
"I wanted to," was all Amy could say. It was the truth, but why she had wanted to do it escaped her at the moment.
Lina looked at Amy's now empty hands. "Where's your glass?"
Amy blushed when she realized she didn't think to pour one for herself. "I'm...not thirsty." She took her place on the sofa next to Lina.
Lina looked at her expectantly. It made Amy squirm uncomfortably. "Well?" Lina said, nodding toward the DVD on the coffee table.
"Oh, you want ME to...yes, of course!" Amy nervously grabbed the DVD, removed it from its case and put it in the player. She hadn't used Lina's home theater setup very much, so she was surprised that she was able to figure out how to get everything going properly. Once the television and the stereo were set to the right inputs, Amy returned to the couch.
"Thank you, Amy," Lina said dispassionately.
"You're welcome, miss...uh, Lina."
