(Quick note: I screwed up the psychiatrist's name in the last chapter. Sorry for butchering someone else's character.)
Dr. Von Hauser picked out a new set of clothes as quick as she could. When we got to the bra and underwear department, she said, "I really feel embarrassed shopping with you here."
Not wanting to make her feel any more uncomfortable than I already had, I said, "I can go wait for you if you'd like."
"No," she said abruptly. "I-I'd feel better if you were here." Clearly the events of the last hour or so had traumatized her. I couldn't blame her. After all, from her perspective, her clothes had suddenly vanished just outside her office, and she had to have a patient of hers try to prevent other people from seeing her unclothed.
"OK," I said. She grabbed a plain white bra and a hot pink thong off the racks. I don't think she intended to grab a thong, but didn't seem to notice or care. She already had a skirt and simple sports coat folded over her arm. I guessed she wasn't going to bother to buy a shirt.
Dr. Von Hauser began to head up to the check-out counter. "You still need shoes," I said.
"Actually, I have an extra pair in my office," she said. "I figure I made it here without shoes, I can walk back without them."
"Don't you need a shirt?" I asked, trying not to imply anything.
She said, "Joe, I'd rather not spend the money, to be honest. I usually wear a coat over any shirt anyway."
"That makes sense," I said.
She walked up to the front and paid for the clothes. Luckily she still had her purse with her credit cards in it. She asked me to wait at the front of the store while she went and put them on in the dressing room. Two minutes later she emerged and put the overcoat back on the rack. The clerk said she hoped that they caught the guys who attacked Dr. Von Hauser. Dr. Von Hauser thanked her for her help and we left the store.
