Truth is Relative

added by The Strange One 12 years ago TG O

Things were silent for several minutes, Sunny staring at Rain expectantly as the goth girl searched for words. "Truth is...relative." Rain began. "Really, with a device like this, truth is exactly what I choose to make it. If everyone remembers things one way, and I have memories of another, then really, what does it matter which one happened first? I mean, really, can you imagine things any other way than they are now? Would you want to?" Rain added that last part, hoping to catch Sunny off-guard.

For her part, it worked. Sunny looked around, contemplating her apartment and life. "I suppose not..." Sunny trailed off for a moment. "I guess, if you want to change yourself into a girl, that's your business. I don't appreciate my memories being altered, but seeing as I know what happened now, I guess that's alright too. And you're right - if you hadn't said something, I wouldn't have known anything was different. Hell, you could have lied to me or changed my memory with that device and I wouldn't have known either. So, I guess THAT kind of honesty counts for something." Rain was relieved. "But who was Jay, how did he catch you earlier, and who did you change him into?"

Rain blinked her eyes, disbelieving. "Jay?" She asked, attempting to sound innocent.

"Yeah. When Dan came in, you mentioned that Jay had caught you earlier and you turned him into a girl. Who is Jay? I've never heard you mention him before. And who did you turn him into? Someone I know? Or someone I think I know? Is she good looking? Is she better looking than me?" Sunny fired these questions off machine-gun style.

Rain grasped for another explanation, hoping it would float as well as the last one.

Meanwhile...

Misty was giggling drunkenly as Daniele attempted to help her 'sister' to the chair. "Oh, thanks Daniele. Hey, a laptop! This is yours, right?! I can checks my email, right? You don't mind?" Misty asked, slurring her words.

Daniele rolled her eyes. "No, it's not mine - mine is in our room. You know that, you LIVE HERE. But yes, you can check your email. Just sit here quietly while I go get you some water." She looked over at Rain and Sunny, Rain attempting to eek out some sort of explanation about...well, something she'd done. 'Those two...even their names are contradictory. How did we even all wind up together? I mean, when they get along, they're fantastic, but it's like I can't even leave the house without some sort of dustup occurring. Is it me? Am I the glue that holds our friendship together?" Daniele contemplated these questions as she poured her sister a glass of water. While grabbing some icecubes, she spied the vodka they kept in the freezer. Pouring herself a shot, she reflected back to her ruined evening, downing the grain alcohol in a single gulp.

Daniele was hot, and she knew it. But hot girls were a dime a dozen. Daniele was intelligent. But again, she knew that. Hot, intelligent girls were rarer, but hardly unique. No, what made Daniele one of a kind was the fact that she wasn't one of a kind - she had an identical twin. One as hot and intelligent as she was. In fact, other than their names, they were almost identical in every way - personality, interests, taste in booze, and tastes in men. And they knew how to use their assets to their fullest advantage.

It was Misty's idea to hit the campus bar tonight. They dressed identically - knee-high black boots, short denim skirts, sleeveless red halter tops. Their long. dark red hair was brushed out to perfection, and their faces were perfectly made up. They knew they were going turn heads.

The night took a turn, however, when the bartender put seven shots in front of each of them - gifts from admirers in the corner of the bar. It was a group of local frat boys (seven total), out looking for a good time. Daniele smiled politely, waved suggestively at the boys, mouthed ‘thanks’ at them, and then quietly asked the bartender to take the shots back.

Misty was five shots in before Daniele knew what happened. Daniele paid their tab immediately, dragging Misty out of the bar, who protesting the whole way. The frat boys followed them out to the parking lot, feigning shock and disappointment, but left them alone once they reached their car.

Returning to the living room, she briefly overheard Rain launching into some diatribe about the nature of truth and the subjectivity of reality. Daniele rolled her eyes again and handed her sister the glass of water.

Misty took a sip before looking at her twin. "Why'd you pull me out of there? Those boys bought us drinks! We went out looking for boys and we found them, and you made us look like total bitches.” Daniele sighed.

“There were seven of them and two of us. I didn’t feel like getting raped, gang raped, date raped or any variation thereof. And I know what you’re going to say, ‘they were cute –‘”

“They were!” Misty interrupted.

“Yes, they were, but they were also frat guys, which means they have all the maturity and intelligence of a tree stump.” Daniele said with some force. Misty’s mouth opened to protest, but she nodded after thinking a few moments about it.

“Still…” Misty said, “they might have been hung.” Daniele nodded in agreement – they might have been. Misty put the glass down next to the laptop, and stood, wrapping her arms around her sister. “Thanks for looking out for me, sis.”

Daniele returned the embrace, a smile spreading across her face. “Anytime, sis.” They held the hug for a few more moments before releasing from each other, Misty plopping back down in the chair with a flourish…knocking the water glass over onto the laptop.

The screen sputtered and fizzled before shorting out. “Oh shit.” Misty and Daniele said in unison. ‘Rain is gonna be pissed.’ Daniele thought to herself.
