You shove your hand behind your back as the bell over your door rings. You almost forgot that people are in and out of here all day. You glance up and see an older woman with a funny frown on her face. She's looking around, studying every object with incredible scrutiny.
"Ma'am?" You ask, wanting to act normal...you don't want her to see your hand. "Is there anything I can help you with?" You pray there isn't.
"I don't think so," She begins, but she checks herself and registers a double take. "What a remarkable necklace." She says, coming closer to you. "May I see it please?"
You lift it up with your left, keeping your scaly right behind you. You don't feel any more changes to it, so maybe whatever's happening is over. You don't even pay any attention to the woman's scrutiny.
"Where did you get it?" She asks, touching the golden heart of your locket.
"I got it from my father." You say. "His last gift to me." You fumble with it for a second, but open it to show her the pictures. You have to smile at the photographs of you and your father.
So does she. "It's beautiful." She says. "And...the chain? Did he give you that as well?" She still has a funny, hard look around her eyes.
"No. I bought it this morning." You say.
"Where?" The woman asks, starting forward. Her entire manner has changed...she's become eager, almost hungry, for your answer.
"A jewelry shop. A little jewelry shop a few blocks up that way. It had all sorts of things there...this was the simplest." You feel nervous. "Do you want to buy anything?"
"Yes." The woman smiles unpleasantly. "I'll take your necklace."
You stare...what do you tell her?
